Isaiah 176

Text: Isaiah 53:11

Subject: The Satisfaction Of Christ As Our Substitute

Date: Sunday Evening - April 3, 1994

Introduction:

What happened at Calvary? Did the Lord Jesus Christ redeem us from all iniquity, or did he merely make men redeemable?

·  Put away sin, or just make it possible?

·  Reconcile us to God, or make us reconcilable?

·  Justify His people, or make it possible for men to be justified?

·  Effectually secure the salvation of His people, or make them salvable?

Did the Son of God actually, effectually make atonement for sin by the shedding of his blood; or did he just make a stab at it?

Hear the Word of God by the mouth of his servant Isaiah - Here is a true, divinely inspired description of the work of the Son of God in its results - "He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied." Did you catch that bold and glorious assertion - "He Shall Be Satisfied!" That is my subject tonight. I love this word of promise. Let me state it as emphatically as I possibly can. "He" the Son of God, our great Substitute," "Shall," without question or qualification, most assuredly "Be," as the result of all that he suffered in death and as the result of the infinite merit and efficacy of his blood, "Satisfied," fully, completely, eternally satisfied!

·  He was satisfied with the terms and price of redemption required in the covenant.

·  He is satisfied with his purchased possession.

·  He is satisfied with himself.

·  He shall be satisfied with us.

Proposition: Our text is a declaration of complete, effectual redemption accomplished by the shed blood of Jehovah’s Servant, our Substitute, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I preach an undefeated, undefeatable Savior. The Son of God can never be frustrated in his purposes or defeated in his designs. He was not conquered at Calvary. He was the Conqueror! And he shall not be defeated in the end. "He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied!" The cross of Jesus Christ shall never be discovered a miscarriage. The Lion of the tribe of Judah must prevail! Our text is a proclamation, in the plainest terms possible of the infallible efficacy of Christ’s atoning work.

This is the place at which satan most constantly attacks the gospel and the glory of our God. Therefore, this must be the place of our most constant watchfulness and most thoroughly dogmatic instruction. The old serpent cannot dispute the historic fact of the crucifixion. Therefore he tries desperately to destroy in the minds of men the intrinsic values and meanings of Christ’s atoning sacrifice.

Note: It was a penal sacrifice - A Substitutionary Work!

The pulpits of our land are no less guilty than the editors of Time. Today, as always, the prince of darkness has turned his ministers into angels of light and placed them in pulpits, teaching men to be good and do good, without giving them the basis of goodness. The one thing every messenger of satan, every preacher of false religion holds in common with all others is the denial of Christ’s effectual atonement. Oh, they give lip service to Bible doctrine and Bible terms, but deny the very foundation of the gospel - Substitution. Our modern day prophets of Baal preach…

·  A Redemption that Redeemed no one!

·  An Atonement that made Atonement for no one!

·  A Salvation that Saves no one!

Today we are told that the sacrificial blood of the Lord Jesus Christ does not, in itself, secure the salvation of anyone, but that it only makes salvation possible for everyone. We are told that the blood of Christ becomes effectually operative by man’s faith. That doctrine of the atonement is heresy. It is not the teaching of this Book.

Our text talks about a satisfied Savior, not a frustrated helper! When the Word of God talks about the satisfaction of Christ, it is talking about two things - Christ’s making satisfaction and Christ’s being satisfied.

·  Christ, by his one offering for sin, has COMPLETELY SATISFIED THE LAW AND JUSTICE OF GOD.

Romans 3:24-26

Galatians 3:13

I John 1:9

·  By his substitutionary death as our sin-atoning Savior SATISFIED ALL THE TYPES, SHADOWS AND PROPHECIES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT REGARDING REDEMPTION.

Genesis 3:15

Psalm 22

Isaiah 53

·  Noah’s Ark

·  Abraham and Isaac on Mt. Moriah

·  The Passover - The Scapegoat

·  The Brazen Serpent - The Smitten Rock

·  The crucified Son of God presented to sinners in the gospel SATISFIES ALL THE DEMANDS OF A GUILTY CONSCIENCE, ALL THE NEEDS OF A CONVICTED SINNER, AND ALL THE DESIRES OF A RENEWED HEART.

Hebrews 9:12-14

I Corinthians 1:30

Psalm 73:25-26

Philippians 3:7-14

·  But our text declares that THE LORD JESUS CHRIST BE SATISFIED - "He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied." I take that to mean that all for which he made travail unto death, all for which he suffered and died, he shall see done, and when he does he shall be completely satisfied with what he has done.

·  He was satisfied with his work when it was done.

"I have finished" - Righteousness!

"It is finished!" - Redemption!

·  He is satisfied with the reward of his obedience - His exaltation and glory - (Phil. 2:8-12).

·  He is satisfied with his present position and work as our great high priest.

·  His Dominion (John 17:2).

·  His Intercession (I John 2:1-2).

·  The Son of God shall be satisfied when he sees his seed, all his seed, completely saved (John 6:37-40).

·  Called by His Spirit.

·  Converted by His Grace.

·  Conformed to His Image.

·  He shall be satisfied in the great and glorious resurrection day.

·  The Resurrection (I Cor. 15:51-58).

·  The Judgment - "Come, ye blessed!" (Acts 17:31).

·  The Presentation (I Cor. 15:24-28).

·  The Everlasting Blessedness of His People - The Marriage Supper!

·  The Everlasting Exaltation and Praise of His Own Great Name (Rev. 4:11-12; 5:9-14).

Application: Nothing will satisfy Christ short of the complete, eternal salvation of his people (Mt. 1:21). And nothing will satisfy the believing heart short of complete, perfect conformity to the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:10).

À Perfect Commitment.

Á Perfect Communion.

 Perfect Conformity.
