FIVE ARGUMENTS FOR FAITH IN CHRIST
2 Corinthians 5:11
“Knowing
therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.” Here are five things
revealed in the gospel that should persuade all who are made aware of them to
believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. May the Spirit of God be pleased to make them
effectual to your heart and grant you life and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
by his almighty grace.
The Glory of the Gospel
The gospel of the grace of God is such a
glorious thing that even the heavenly angels contemplate it with astonishment
(Eph. 3:10; 1 Pet. 1:11-12). It reveals a glorious Savior (Isa. 9:6), a
glorious Sacrifice (Isa. 53:9-10), a glorious satisfaction (Rom. 3:24-26), a
glorious Portion for all who believe (Lam. 3:23), a glorious provision for our
souls (Ps. 84:11), and a glorious promise of everlasting salvation to faith in
Christ (Mark. 16:15-16).
The Exceeding Sinfulness of Unbelief
Unbelief is the most horrible sin and crime
against God in all the world. It calls the holy Lord God a liar (1 John 5:10),
and goes about to establish a righteousness of its own (Rom. 10:3), refusing to
submit to the righteousness of God in Christ. If you are yet lost, it is
because you think you are too good to be saved. God save you from your
delusion!
The Misery of Unbelievers
If you are an unbeliever you are in a miserable
state and condition. You are without God, without Christ, without hope in this
world (Eph. 2:11-12). The wrath of God is upon you. Your screaming conscience
torments you day and night. There is no rest for your soul.
The Blessedness of Faith in Christ
Believers, by faith in Christ, are rich,
infinitely and eternally rich (1 Cor. 3:21). All the grace we need for time and
eternity is ours in Christ: -- forgiving grace, -- justifying grace, -- preserving
grace, -- providential grace. By faith in Christ we have access to, communion
with, and peace from God. And in our Redeemer we have the sure promise of
everlasting glory (John 17:5, 22; Rom. 8:17; 2 Cor. 5:1-9). We shall have an
entrance into heaven at death, resurrection at the last day, and perfect,
everlasting glorification with Christ. This is blessedness!
The Call of the Gospel
How gracious God is! He devised a plan of
redemption, gave his dear Son to die for sinners, accomplished redemption for
undeserving, hell deserving rebels like you and me, and condescends to call and
woo sinners who have long despised his grace to Christ, to be saved freely by
his grace (Isa. 55:1-7). Christ himself, by the power of his Spirit, through
the gospel, calls sinners to himself that they might find life and peace in
him. He promises to receive all who come to him. And he is able, willing, and
ready to save all who do come. Come, then weary sinner, come to Christ, and
salvation is yours. God help you to come. AMEN.
