This is the verse which has headed our newsletter from the time we first came to the field upwards of 25 years ago. The reason we chose this text is that we believe it represents the clearest summary of the work of the gospel and the content of the gospel ministry.

Christ crucified is not the primary message of Scripture, nor the central message of Scripture, nor the most significant message of Scripture. It is true we often speak in this way, but Christ crucified is the message of Scripture. This is Paul’s meaning when he states just a little further along, “For I determined not to know anything among you save Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). That is a powerful and dogmatic statement.

Paul does not mean, of course, that all he taught were messages about the crucifixion. He means that Christ was the heart and the focus of everything he preached, whether it was on the atonement, justification, sanctification, sin, righteousness, regeneration, holiness, the person of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, faith, the life of the believer, or any other topic which he preached as “the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation”. (Ephesians 1:13).

The Apostle Paul clearly saw this as the chief characteristic of his entire ministry. In Romans 1 when Paul writes, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth,” he means salvation in its fullest and complete sense. He means that the gospel of Christ crucified is the whole counsel of God. The centrality of Christ is brought out clearly in 1 Corinthians 1:30 where we read, “But of him are ye are in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” This is the message which under-girds and explains the entire revelation of God in the redemption of his people.

Paul says of his ministry in Ephesus, “I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:26). He makes abundantly clear what he means by this statement when he says, “I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.... But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20: 20,21,24). Now we know that Paul did not spend three years in Ephesus preaching only messages on repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus. He says right here that he declared to them the whole counsel of God. Nevertheless, in describing the ministry he received from the Lord and was faithful to execute in his three years in Ephesus, Paul characterizes it as testifying “to the gospel of the grace of God”. This is the message which characterizes the ministry of every gospel preacher.

The Feast of Passover

The first Holy Convocation God required Israel to keep every year was the Feast of Passover. This feast was a constant reminder of God’s great work of grace in bringing Israel out of Egypt by his mighty power and stretched out arm, because of the blood that was shed for them (Exodus 12-14). The Passover was a picture and a constant reminder of God’s promise to send a Redeemer, even Christ our Passover, who is sacrificed for us (1 Corinthians 5:7).

God’s Work

This feast is called “the Lord’s Passover” because the whole of the work was his. Three things were prominent in the first Passover — (1.) A Lamb — (2.) Blood! — (3.) Deliverance! — It was preeminently “the Lord’s Passover!” He ordained it. He provided the lamb. He accepted the lamb. He passed over the people. He brought them out of Egypt and across the Red Sea. He was praised for it (Exodus 15). — “Salvation is of the Lord!” As often as we eat the bread and drink the wine at the Lord’s Table, like Israel of old, we show forth the Lord’s death until he comes again. As Israel kept the passover in remembrance of their redemption out of Egypt, we observe the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of our Redeemer and our redemption by him, in remembrance of redemption finished by his blood atonement (1 Peter 1:18-20. And we observe that blessed ordinance in anticipation of the redemption (deliverance) of our bodies from the grave in resurrection glory (Romans 8:23; 13:11).

A Lamb Slain

The Lamb is always at the forefront in the Book of God. “The Lamb slain” was the first object held up to the view of Israel when they were about to be delivered. The same is true today. “Behold the Lamb of God!” is still the cry that first reaches a sinner’s ear, the very first message a sinner hears. Christ, the Lamb of God, our sin-atoning Savior, is the very first thing the chosen, redeemed sinner sees in his experience of grace. The very first feast with which God would have his people to worship him, the very first feast which the God of all grace required fallen, sinful men to keep, the very first day of every year was a display of God’s infinite mercy, love, and grace to sinners in Christ. It was a feast of redemption, the feast of the lamb! How gracious our God is! “He delighteth in mercy!” What grace meets the sinner! God meets us with the Lamb; and that Lamb is his own beloved Son! In the Lamb, God shows us life out of death, life for sinners rising out of the death of his own darling Son!

The People Delivered

All Israel came out of Egypt. Not a hoof was left in the land of God’s curse (Exodus 10:26). Israel went out of Egypt with a high hand, carrying the spoils of Egypt with them. The slaying of the Lamb of God would be meaningless if any for whom his blood was shed were left to perish under the wrath of God. The Lamb of God did not die in vain! The picture of the passover feast could not be complete without every blood bought sinner saved, without every ransomed soul with Christ in heaven (Luke 22:16; Revelation 4:10-11; 5:1-14).
