Praying for the dead, as ignorant papists and Mormons do, is an act of idolatry and rebellion under the pretense of worship and reverence. It is asking your god to change his mind, alter his decree, deny his justice, and undo his judgment. Your god might do those things, if he could do anything. — Jehovah will not!

Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal ThroneDon Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My FatherÕs World — SMD)

1.     Our sovÕreign God maintains His universal throne;

In heavÕn, and earth, and hell He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whateÕer He please; and none can stay his hand!

2.     All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sovÕreignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But EsauÕs heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3.     What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will, or say, ÒWhat doest Thou?Ó

Jehovah is the SovÕreign still; and all to Him must bow!

4.     My soul, bow and adore the Lord in all His ways;

His sovÕreignty none can explore; but I will trust His grace!

ÒFor of Him and through Him and to Him are all things:

To Whom be glory evermore! Amen! Amen! Amen!Ó

Life is a Vapor

James 4:4

Pastor Frank Tate

Our Lord called one of our dear ladies home this past week. Norma was 103 years old. On her 100th birthday she told me that she could not believe she was 100 years old. She told me that all those years had passed so quickly. That shouldnÕt surprise us. Job said, ÒMy days are swifter than a weaverÕs shuttle.Ó (Job 7:6) James said, ÒFor what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.Ó (James 4:14) If 103 years passed quickly for Norma, how much more quickly will my days pass? Since we know our days will be gone so quickly, there are a few things a wise person will do.

1.    Seek the Lord while he may be found in a day of grace. We think so many things are so important right now, but very soon we will see all that has ever mattered is Christ. Then seek him now.

2.    Live to serve Christ not this flesh, which will soon go back to the dust no matter how much we serve and pamper it.

3.    Be generous with all the material blessings God has given you. It is all his anyway and very soon we wonÕt be needing those material things at all.

4.    Be generous with words of love and kindness. DonÕt leave anything unsaid that should be said to those we love. Forgive those who need forgiveness. Comfort those who are hurting. Be kind to those who need kindness. That would be a good legacy to leave behind.

5.    DonÕt get so upset by the political and social events of the day. There is no doubt they are bringing about the demise of our society, but we will be done with it all in a few days. LetÕs be more concerned with the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Believers will never be done with those things which are eternal.

ÒThe God of this WorldÓ

2 Corinthians 4:4

Our translators, in my opinion, were mistaken in using a lower case ÒgÓ for God in this passage. Their doing implies that Satan is here spoken of as Òthe god of this world.Ó Nowhere in Scripture is Satan given such a title. And there is no reason in this passage to imagine that Paul is referring to Satan. He who is God is the Maker, Proprietor, and Governor of this world. It is he, and he alone, who blinds the eyes of them that believe not the gospel of Christ (John 12:40; Romans 11:7; 2 Corinthians 3:14; 2 Thessalonians 2:11). And it is he alone who Òcommanded the light to shine out of darknessÓ in our hearts Òto give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.Ó In judgment God sends blindness. In grace he sends light and causes Òthe blind to seeÓ (Matthew 15:31). When God comes to save, Òin that day the deaf shall hear the words of the Book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darknessÓ (Isaiah 29:18).

ÒConcerning the Feasts of the LordÓ

Leviticus 23:1-44

The 23rd chapter of Leviticus describes the seven feasts the Lord God required Israel to keep as Òholy convocationsÓ throughout the Old Testament. These Òholy convocationsÓ were typical, ceremonial feasts by which the whole work of redemption is pictured.

1.    The Feast of Passover (v. 5) was a picture of our redemption by Christ.

2.    The Feast of Unleavened Bread (vv. 6-8) was a portrayal of faith in Christ.

3.    The Feast of Firstfruits (vv. 9-14) typified the resurrection of Christ and our resurrection with him.

4.    The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) (vv. 15-22) portrayed the ingathering of GodÕs elect by the irresistible power and omnipotent grace of God the Holy Spirit.

5.    The Feast of Trumpets (vv. 23-25) was a typical picture of the proclamation of the gospel.

6.    The Feast of Atonements (Expiations) (vv. 26-32) typified Òthe times of the restitution of all things, of which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets, since the world beganÓ (Acts 3: 21).

7.    The Feast of Tabernacles (vv. 33-43) portrayed that eternal glory awaiting us when the whole work of grace is complete and all GodÕs elect are brought into heavenly glory, when the Lord God shall forever be our Tabernacle.

The Sabbath

Each feast involved the observance of the sabbath. In fact, the opening verses (vv. 1-3) of the chapter show us that the sabbath was prominent in all Old Testament worship. There was no worship of God without the observance of the sabbath in the Old Testament.

      The fact that the sabbath is given such a prominent place and is intimately connected with all these feasts of worship is very important. The Lord is here giving us a very instructive picture of redemption and grace.

      These seven feasts give us a vivid type of all GodÕs saving operations of grace for his elect. The sabbath portrayed that rest which remains for the people of God. It was a ceremonial day to be observed by Israel; but it was also a type of that which was (and in a sense is) yet to come. The sabbath overshadowed all the feasts of worship. It typically encompassed all that great and glorious work of GodÕs salvation in Christ, which this chapter foreshadows, when it is finished.

      The sabbath is GodÕs rest, into which all who believe enter now by faith in Christ; but which, as to its full and actual accomplishment, yet remains (Hebrews 4:1-11). Soon we shall enter into our everlasting rest that shall never be disturbed. While resting in Christ, we labor as workers together with God, in the full assurance that, when all our earthly toil is over, we shall enjoy unbroken, eternal rest in those mansions of unfading light and unalloyed blessedness where labor and sorrow can never enter. Here we have but a foretaste of the eternal sabbath awaiting us when time shall be no more, that sabbath which shall never be broken, that Òholy convocationÓ which shall never be dissolved.
