ChristÕs sheep contribute none of their own wool to their garments of salvation. They wear only the fine linen of ChristÕs obedience.

Angels Wonder at the Sight Don Fortner

(Tune: #393 — Take My Life and Let It Be — 77.77)

1.    Christ, the Lord, from Calvary

Calls the wandÕrer passing by;

ÒWas there ever grief like Mine?Ó

Asks the SuffÕrer all divine.

2.    Hear the dying SaviorÕs cries;

Righteous anger on Him lies.

Justice payment full requires;

Jesus suffers, groans, expires!

3.    Angels wonder at the sight;

And the sun withholds its light.

Earth, and hell, astonishÕd view; —

Sinner, is it nought to you?

4.    NeÕer did sorrows equal His,

But they purchasÕd heavÕnly bliss.

VanquishÕd Satan, sin oÕerthrew; —

ÒIs this nothing?Ó — He asks you.

5.    ÒYes,Ó my thankful soul replies,

ÒI now see in Him Who dies,

Pardon purchasÕd, peace procurÕd,

Grace bestowÕd, and heavÕn securÕd.Ó

Faith — Essential but not Meritorious

Faith in Christ is essential to salvation. No man will ever be saved, accepted with God, apart from true faith in Christ. You must believe on Christ; or you will perish. But do not ever think that your faith is meritorious with God. Faith is the instrument by which we receive God's blessings; but it is not the meritorious cause of those blessings. The obedience of Christ alone is meritorious with God.

A Tribute to a Cherished Friend and Brother

David Coleman

December 13, 1954 — May 25, 2019

David Coleman is a beloved and cherished friend and brother, in the sweet fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ. I had the privilege of serving our God and Savior with him, as his pastor for thirty-nine years. In all those years, we never had a cross word between us. Occasionally, as his work schedule allowed, David travelled with me to preaching engagements in churches across the country. These gave us blessed times of fellowship. And his musical contributions were always a blessing to GodÕs elect.

The Lord graciously gifted David with exceptional musical talent; and he used it well. He regularly sang for our assembly in our worship services. His songs were always well selected, honoring the Lord God our Savior and his wondrous free and sovereign grace in Christ.

            A few years ago, he sang a hymn I had never seen or heard before, as he often did. That particular hymn stands out in my mind because it spoke so magnificently of our GodÕs wise and adorable providence. The hymn was Handfuls of Purpose. It speaks of Boaz ordering his servants to leave Òhandfuls of purposeÓ (Ruth 2:16) for Ruth and rightly uses the typical story of Boaz and Ruth to portray how the Lord Jesus Christ, our Kinsman Redeemer, orders all things in providence for the everlasting salvation of his elect.

            Bro. Dave was always encouraging to his pastor, especially with regard to the preaching of the gospel. But, in recent years, as his health declined, he spoke most often to me about GodÕs wonderful providence, ChristÕs accomplished redemption, and the amazing grace he experienced by the will, purpose, and power of our sovereign God. As his body weakened more, when he was still able to sing in our worship services, he frequently sang the 121st Psalm. I am certain he was not only singing GodÕs praise, but also expressing his continual desire before the throne of grace.

ÒI will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.Ó

            I count it one of the great privileges and joys of my life that our God made Bro. David Coleman such a rich and blessed part of my life. In the thirty-nine years I knew him, he never once spoke in my hearing, or to my knowledge, an evil word about any in his church family. Instead, when someone else suggested something negative, David was always quick to find a way to cover any perceived evil and point to a good statement or deed.

            My cherished friend suffered much pain and weakness in recent years. I wept for him much, as I tried to pray for him and his family. — No more! Thank you, my God, for your wonderful grace bestowed on my friend in Christ. And thank you for your rich mercy bestowed on me in giving David Coleman to me.

The State of the Departed

2 Corinthians 5:1

Few subjects arouse greater interest than the state of the departed. This is a subject about which everyone is interested. We are interested in it personally, because we are all dying mortals. And we are interested in it because we all have loved ones whose bodies are buried beneath the earth. Where are those who sleep in Jesus before the resurrection? What is the condition of a redeemed soul when it leaves the body?

      These are questions about which no one can be indifferent. I have searched the Scriptures and found some answers to these questions that I trust the Lord will be pleased to bless to your soulÕs consolation and joy in Christ.

Blessed are the Dead

The wise man Solomon, after considering Òall the oppressions that are done under the sun,Ó the tears of the oppressed in this world, the power of those who oppress, and the fact that there is no comfort for GodÕs saints in this world, said, ÒI praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet aliveÓ (Ecclesiastes 4:1-2). In the Book of Revelation, we read a similar statement. — ÒBlessed are the dead which die in the LordÓ (Revelation 14:13).

      Yet, when we go to the funeral home and graveside to bid our loved ones good-bye, we are filled with sorrow and weeping. Why is that so? If the one God has taken is an unbeliever, the sorrow is understandable. Those who die in unbelief and sin die under the wrath of God. If our sorrow is the sorrow of parting loved ones and friends, it is reasonable. None of us like to part with cherished friends and loved ones, even temporarily. However, if the sorrow is the sorrow of those who have no hope, uncontrollable anguish, or even anger at God for having taken someone we love, I cannot understand that.

      Such sorrow reveals both ignorance and unbelief, ignorance of the blessed state of GodÕs saints in heaven and unbelief regarding the Word of God, the promises of the gospel, and the finished work of Christ.

      Our departed friends are alive and well. Though their bodies have died and lay in the earth, they are more alive than ever and full of happiness in heaven.

Immediate Glory

As we think about the wonders of immortality, our only source of information is the Word of God. Only the eternal God can unveil the mysteries of eternity. And the Word of God tells us plainly that the spirits of redeemed sinners, saved people, believers, immediately after death enter into heaven and into a state of eternal happiness (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

      We are creatures of God made with immortal, undying souls. Though these bodies must die and rot in the earth like the brute beasts, our souls will exist forever. As soon as you die your soul will enter into a state of endless happiness or misery. Man does not die like a dog. When your dog dies, that is all there is to it. It ceases to be. But when you die, that is not all there is to it. Your soul lives on, not in a state of sleep, insensitivity, and inactivity, but in the fulness of life and consciousness.
