My Thoughts about My Personal Holiness
In the Book of God believing people speak of their personal righteousness, good works, and holiness in three distinct ways: (1.) filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6), (2.) dung (Philippians 3:8), and (3.) breaking wind (Isaiah 26:18). Those are precisely my thoughts about my personal righteousness, good works, and holiness. — What are yours? Tell me, honestly, and IÕll tell you what you think of Christ.
ÒThou Wilt Keep Him In Perfect PeaceÓ Isaiah 26:3
The words Òperfect peaceÓ might be translated Òpeace, peace,Ó or Òpeace upon peace.Ó They are intended to express peace in the most emphatic sense possible. The peace that God gives his people in Christ is certain peace, real peace, increasing peace, extensive peace, and everlasting peace.
No Danger Peace is the absence of war and danger. There was a time when God appeared to be at war with us. But as soon as a sinner trusts Christ his warfare is over. And the danger of war is gone (Isaiah 40:1-2).
Reigning Peace Peace reigns over all things within the circle of the believerÕs life. All our sins have been completely forgiven forever, never to be charged against us, never to be remembered against us! Christ has taken possession of us, never to lose us. Our heavenly Father rules the universe, never neglecting us. God the Holy Spirit is our Divine Comforter. There is nothing we cannot safely commit to God our Savior. Cast Òall your care upon him; for he careth for you.Ó
Soul Rest The peace that God gives is rest in the soul (Psalm 42:5, 11; 43:5). As the body lying upon a bed finds rest for all its members, so the soul stretching itself out upon Christ finds rest and peace for every faculty. The heart finds rest in GodÕs love. Judgment finds rest in his wisdom. Desire finds rest in the LordÕs goodness. Hope rests in his Word. And expectation finds rest in the promises of God. Peace in the soul is resignation to the will of God, confidence in the goodness of God, and contentment with the providence of God.
Honest Survey Child of God, take an honest survey of things. If you do not enjoy this peace, the blame must be laid at your door alone. We make ourselves restless by unbelief. Look upward. — There is no sword of justice against you, no cup of wrath for you to bear, no angry God against you. Look downward. — There is no condemnation, no death, no judgment, no second death, no hell for you to endure. Look backward. — All your past sins are blotted out, forgiven, taken away, and remembered no more. Look outward. — God has made all the beasts of the field, all the stones of the earth, all the trees of the forest, and even your enemies to be at peace with you. Look inward. — God has set up a guard in your heart to keep your heart. His name is Peace, the Peace of God that Òpasseth understandingÓ is GodÕs gift to faith. Look forward. — Heavenly glory awaits you. All that the Man Christ Jesus is and has done soon shall be yours!
ÒWhose Mind is Stayed on TheeÓ Isaiah 26:3
The word ÒmindÓ refers not only to our intellect, but also to the whole of oneÕs inner being. If I am stayed upon Jehovah, I have peace. If I am straying from the Lord, I am wandering into misery.
GodÕs Gift Peace is GodÕs gift to his elect. If you look to philosophers, psychologists, therapists, physicians, or preachers for peace, you will be disappointed. No man can give peace. And you cannot muster peace from within. The only way to obtain peace is to trust the Lord Jesus Christ, to put yourself into his hands.
Given to Faith God gives peace to faith. — ÒThou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee.Ó Faith in Christ is not the cause of peace. Grace is. Faith in Christ is not the foundation of peace. Christ is. But faith in Christ is the channel through which peace comes to the heart. God gives us faith in his dear Son. Then he rewards that faith with peace. Faith proclaims peace in the soul. And faith nurtures peace. John Trapp rightly observed, ÒAn excellent description of true, saving faith may be taken from this text.Ó That gift of faith wrought in the soul by God the Holy Ghost brings with it multiplied peace: peace with God, peace with others, and peace within. And it is continually renewed peace, renewed in us by our Divine Comforter continually giving us faith in Christ.
Kept in Peace The Lord Jehovah, the triune God, keeps those in peace whose minds are stayed upon him. To be stayed upon him is to be glued to and built upon him by faith. If we would enjoy peace, let all our thoughts be stayed upon your God. Never think of your sin without thinking of his forgiveness. Never think of your needs without thinking of his bounty. Never think of your past without thinking of his providence. Never think of your future without thinking of his promise. Let all our imaginations be stayed upon our God. We ought never imagine anything to be a possibility that is in anyway contrary to the goodness, grace, power, and promise of God in Christ. If you would live in peace, let all your desires be stayed upon your God. Want nothing but what the Lord wills to give. Desire nothing but what God deems good. ÒRejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Ó Set your heart upon ChristÕs redeeming work, his providential care, and his everlasting promises, and you will obtain peace and be kept in peace, Òthe peace of God which passeth all understanding!Ó
