The distressing, deep-seated evil of the old man in us and the relentless warring of the flesh against the spirit are instruments by which God the Holy Ghost graciously weans from trusting in ourselves, makes Christ more precious, and causes us to look away from self to Christ alone as all our Wisdom, Righteousness, Sanctification, and Redemption.

Atoning Blood — Don Fortner

(Tune: The Doxology —LM)

1.    Good news the gospel herald bears,

To banish all my slavish fears: —

Christ, on the great atoning day,

Took all His peopleÕs sins away.

2.    I know He thus removed all mine

For I am blest with life divine;

And, sprinkled with atoning blood,

I trust the smitten Lamb of God.

3.    Christ Jesus, my dear Surety,

Made sin for me, put sin away!

Yes, in His blood my sins were drowned,

And with my Lord I shall be crowned!

4.    Trusting Christ Jesus crucified,

The Spirit has the blood applied,

That seals my pardon, quells my fear,

And gives the hope of glory here.

Why did Christ appear?

Pastor Frank Tate

Many people think that the Lord Jesus came as an example to follow. If that is the case, Christ is a failure. No one truly makes a real effort to follow the example of ChristÕs holiness, love, and kindness. Christ came to put away the sin of his people by the sacrifice of himself (Hebrews 9:26). If that is the case Christ is the successful Savior because his sacrifice eternally removed the sin of his people (Hebrews 10:14).

ÒHe taketh away the first that he may establish the second.Ó

Hebrews 10:9

Our blessed Redeemer took away the old ceremonies, sacrifices, priesthood, and ordinances of carnal worship when he came to do the will of God. During the age of legal, ceremonial worship, those things were both useful and good, portraying and pointing sinners to Christ.

Unneeded and Forbidden

When Christ came, he took them away. He took them away because they are no longer needed. The types served their purpose; but now Christ has come. Who needs a picture? The God-man himself is here! The Savior is present with us.

Since Christ took those things away the observance of them is now forbidden (Colossians 2:8-23). God destroyed the temple and every particle of the law and the carnal worship of that age to keep us from returning to legality, and to keep us from ritualism and idolatry. The destruction of the Old Testament legal system is a declaration that redemptionÕs work is done. Christ has finished the work. If we still had those carnal implements of worship, they would only take our minds off of our Lord Jesus Christ. — But that is not all.

Completely Fulfilled

Our Lord Jesus Christ, by his obedience unto death, has fulfilled the law for us. — ÒChrist is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believethÓ (Romans 10:4). To all who trust him Christ is the end of the lawÕs curse, condemnation, covenant, and constraint.

When our Savior took away the types, he brought in something far better. He brought in real, perfect, complete, everlasting atonement. He took away the old legal, Mosaic covenant of works and brought in the new, everlasting covenant of grace (vv. 10-22; Galatians 4:21-5:4; Daniel 9:24).

He took away the first that he might establish the second; and this is far, far better. Once we have seen Christ, we do not miss Aaron. Once we have seen the simplicity of the gospel, we never pine for the complexity and bondage of the law. If ever a sinner enters into the holy place, he will not wish to rehang the veil. No one who has experienced the liberty and freedom of grace will ever return to the bondage and terror of the law (Galatians 5:1-4).

Assurance and Warning

Here the Holy Ghost gives us both a word of assurance and a word of warning. — ÒHe taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.Ó The assurance is this. — Justice is satisfied! — Redemption is accomplished! — Sin is pardoned!

But, be sure you hear the warning. We dare not seek to reestablish any ordinance of the law, lest we build again that which God has cast down. We dare not seek to establish any ordinance of worship which God has not established in his Word, lest we be guilty of idolatry. We dare not tolerate any notion that the second can fail. — ÒHe shall not fail!Ó — His blood shall not fail to atone. His righteousness shall not fail to satisfy. His intercession shall not fail to prevail. His grace shall not fail to save.

Vast and Narrow

Pastor Frank Tate

One of the paradoxes of salvation in Christ is that it is both vast and narrow at the same time. There is vastness in salvation by Christ. His blood cleanses the deepest stain. Christ saves sinners who are in the deepest depths of sin. Christ the Good Shepherd finds and brings home the lost sheep who is furthest away from him. Christ saves sinners from every nation, every race, every language, and every walk of life. The obedience of Christ is vast enough to cover every requirement of GodÕs law. Yet at the same time, salvation in Christ is so narrow that only helpless, hopeless sinners, who bring no merit or deeds of their own, may enter.

Purged and Seated!

Hebrews 1:3 and 10:12

Our LordÕs work of redemption is done. His atonement is complete. The sin, which he bore in his body on the tree have been fully purged away, completely atoned for, and entirely removed. All that Christ came to do he has completely done. The priests of Israel could never sit down, because their work was never done, their sacrifices could never take away sin. — ÒBut this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.Ó

Here is proof positive that the work of redemption is done, completely and perfectly done: — Christ is sitting at the FatherÕs right hand. Sitting down is a posture of rest. A man does not rest until his work is finished. Christ came to do his FatherÕs will, Òby the which will we are sanctified.Ó He would not and could not rest until he had completely and perfectly done his FatherÕs will. ChristÕs sitting in heaven is our assurance that everything required for the salvation of all his people is done (John 16:10; Romans 8:33-34). Righteousness has been established. Atonement has been made. Sin has been put away. GodÕs elect have been perfected (Hebrews 10:10, 14).

ChristÕs sitting at GodÕs right hand also implies that he enjoys great pleasure. The Psalmist, when he spoke of ChristÕs exaltation, wrote, ÒThou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermoreÓ (Psalm 16:11).

The highest joy and pleasure of our Savior is the salvation of his people. Our salvation was the joy set before him, for which he endured the cross, despising the shame (Hebrews 12:2).

How could he enjoy pleasure if his people were in jeopardy? How could he have any joy if he had not secured the salvation of every lamb of his flock? If he had not rendered the eternal salvation of every blood-bought soul as secure as his own throne, he would have no pleasure. There is a smile of pleasure upon our RedeemerÕs face as he sits in glory, because all his ransomed ones are perfectly safe. Because he is seated on the right hand of God forever, we cannot question this fact — Redemption is done!
