The natural man cannot be taught spiritual things. He can be taught religion, doctrine, and strict morality, but not the things of God. To learn the things of God he must be born again.

Another Year is Gone Don Fortner

(Tune: #290 — Be Still, My Soul — 10 10.10 10 10.10)

1.    Another year of our brief lives is gone,

And countless are the wonders we have known;

How oftÕ weÕve seen GodÕs blessings rich and rare,

Proceeding from our FatherÕs love and care!

Him we adore. — His goodness we confess,

His providence, all wise, now let us bless.

2.    Our trials how oft weÕve viewed with fearful eyes,

While mercies great by us have been despised!

Ashamed we bow, and knock at MercyÕs door,

Confess our sin, and plead Your grace the more!

Father, Your grace, Your mercies rich and rare,

Should flood our souls and conquer every fear.

3.    Oh, lift our hearts to Christ exalted high;

As the new year begins, Savior, supply

Our souls with grace, each day by faith to see,

Your mercies new, Your love and grace so free!

Oh, give us grace, each day by faith to see,

Your mercies new, Your love and grace so free!

Who gets the glory?

Ephesians 2:8 — Pastor Marvin Stalnaker

Of all things spoken concerning manÕs salvation, one question stands out more than any other. — Who gets the glory for that salvation? Is the glory given to a spiritually dead sinner because somehow he was able to perceive the depth of his own depravity, work out a perfect righteousness before the holy law of God, and then keep himself secure by perfect faith? Or, is the glory, honor, and praise for that salvation given unto him who saved his people apart from any work that they could do to merit a righteousness before God almighty? The Scripture declares salvation to be by grace through faith; and that (faith) not of ourselves. It is the gift of God.

His Salvation

ÒAnd she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.Ó (Matthew 1:21)

The purpose of the triune God in all things is the salvation of his people; and the purpose of our Lord Jesus Christ in coming into this world was the salvation of his people. Whoever his people are, wherever they may be found, they shall be saved from their sins by Christ, the sovereign Savior. That fact cannot be disputed. He knows who they are. He knows where they are. And he knows how to save them. But how does he save his people from their sins? Here are three distinct, distinguishing acts of sovereign grace by which the Lord Jesus Christ saves his people from their sins, three acts of grace by which the Son of God cuts his sheep out of the goats and makes them to differ (1 Corinthians 4:7).

Redemption

The Lord Jesus has saved all his people from the penalty of their sins by the particular, effectual redemption of our souls from the curse of GodÕs holy law by blood atonement (Galatians 3:13; 2 Corinthians 5:21). This is ÒhowÓ that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. — He died voluntarily, laying down his life for us (Hebrews 10:5-14). He died vicariously, in our place, as our Substitute (Isaiah 53:4-6, 8). And he died victoriously, having accomplished his purpose (Hebrews 1:13; 9:12).

Regeneration

The Lord Jesus Christ saves chosen, redeemed sinners from the reigning power and dominion of their sins by the almighty, irresistible grace and power of God the Holy Spirit in the new birth (John 5:25; 6:63; Psalm 65:4; Ephesians 2:1-5). He comes to his own, as they lay dead and polluted in their own blood, in Òthe time of love,Ó spreads over them the skirt of his righteousness, and says to the dead, ÒLive!Ó And they live by the power of his grace (Ezekiel 16:6-8). He comes by his mighty Spirit and breathes upon the dead, causing life to enter into them (Ezekiel 37:1-14). He comes to sinners, who, like Lazarus, have been dead so long that they are corrupt beyond recognition as the sons of that man created in the image of God, calls them by name and says, ÒCome forth;Ó and those who are dead come forth (John 11:43).

Resurrection

Soon, the Lord Jesus Christ, this very same Jesus, will come again in power and great glory to save all his people from the presence and all the evil consequences of their sins in the resurrection of the just (John 5:25; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). There shall be a resurrection of the just and of the unjust. The wicked shall be raised to suffer all the consequences of their sins forever in hell. But the righteous shall be raised to be saved from all the evil consequences of their sins forever.

Do I have any just, reasonable, biblical grounds for believing that I am one of his people? Indeed, I do. I believe him (1 John 5:1, 9-13). My God-given faith in Christ is the evidence of the fact that he has saved this sinner from his sins; and it is the substance of his salvation (Hebrews 11:1).

A New YearÕs Prayer

Psalm 86:11

There is no better way for us to begin the New Year than by earnestly seeking the will of God in it. It is certain that God sovereignly accomplishes his will, his eternal purpose, in all things (Isaiah 46:9-11). Nothing comes to pass in time except that which God purposed in eternity. Yet nothing is more important, and nothing more difficult to a believer than seeking the will of God in making responsible choices and decisions about his actions in life.

We know by painful experience that it is possible to make the wrong choices. We rejoice to know that God graciously overrules our errors in judgment for our spiritual, eternal good and for the glory of his own great name (Romans 8:28). And we praise him for that. But when a believer walks contrary to the will of his Lord, he brings grief and trouble to himself. Be wise, therefore, and seek grace both to know and do the will of God in all things.

ÒTeach me thy way, O Lord — Do you desire to know the will of God in all things? Then ask God himself to reveal his will to you, by his Spirit and by his Word. He alone can teach you his way; and he will if you are willing to walk in it.

ÒI will walk in thy truth.Ó — In essence, David is saying, ÒLord, if you teach me your way, by your grace, I will gladly walk in it. If you will mark out my path in providence, I will stick to it.Ó This is the attitude of submission and faith before the Lord our God. And where there is true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and submission to his will, there will always be an acknowledgement of weakness and sin and the need for divine grace.

ÒUnite my heart to fear thy name.Ó — We can walk in GodÕs will only as he gives us grace to do so. When we do make errors concerning the will of God, it is either because we have not earnestly sought his will or because we are rebellious to it. Of this one thing we can be sure: God always reveals his will to the person who is willing to do his will. — ÒTrust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path.Ó (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Oh, lift our hearts to Christ exalted high;

As the New Year begins, Savior, supply.

Father, Your grace, Your mercies rich and rare,

Should flood our souls and conquer every fear.

Oh, give us grace, each day by faith to see,

Your mercies new, Your love and grace so free!

The approach of the New Year ought to inspire in our hearts much grateful reflection upon our GodÕs bountiful blessings of grace upon us in Christ Jesus: Blessings of Grace! Blessings of Providence! Blessings upon Our Homes! Blessings upon His Church! Blessings upon Our Labors! — ÒBlessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin!Ó — ÒBlessed are they that put their trust in him!Ó
