All of GodÕs elect were redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary, and only GodÕs elect. All the redeemed, and only the redeemed, are called by irresistible grace and omnipotent mercy and born again by the mighty operations of his grace. All the called, and only the called, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ by the gift of his grace. And all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are preserved and kept by his grace and power unto life everlasting.

When He came, our God and King Don Fortner

(Tune: #93 — Hark! The Herald Angels Sing — 77.77D)

  1. When He came, our God and King, angels made the heavens ring

With His praises in the sky, — ÒGlory to our God on high.Ó

God the Son, from Glory bright, comes to men the Light of Life,

DavidÕs son and DavidÕs God, Son of Man and Son of God!

  1. JESUS is His matchless name, come to save (O Blessed Lamb!),

Come to live and die for us, that in grace God might be just.

Well may sinners now rejoice! Trusting Him, lift up your voice!

GodÕs great Gift — (Unspeakable!), brings us grace unsearchable!

  1. Sing the praises of our Lord, God the Son, incarnate Word.

All the fulness of our God dwells in Him who shed His blood!

Soon His ransomed all shall know all the glory God can show,

And in bliss immortal sing, ÒHallelujah!Ó to our King!

Merry Christmas!

Shelby and I are thankful to our God for making you so much a part of our lives. We are truly thankful and honored that it is our privilege to serve the cause of Christ with you. Thank you for your relentless love and generosity to us. As you gather with your families to celebrate our SaviorÕs incarnation and redemptive accomplishments as our Substitute, we wish you a very merry Christmas.

Christ Died for His People

ÒAnd she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.Ó (Matthew 1:21)

The objects of redemption are described by such words and characteristics as show them to be a special and distinct people. Those who are the objects of redemption are called the people of God our Savior. — ÒFor the transgressions of my people,Ó says the Lord our God, Òwas he stricken,Ó stricken by the rod of Divine justice to make satisfaction for our sins and to redeem us from them.

My People

When he was about to come and redeem us, Zacharias said, ÒBlessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people.Ó Thus, he prophesied that God would redeem and save his elect by sending Christ, the Dayspring from on high. He visited his people in the flesh and redeemed us by his blood (Luke 1:68, 78). Therefore, the angel of God told Joseph to call the SaviorÕs name ÒJesusÓ and gave this as the reason: Òfor he shall save his people from their sins.Ó

Not All

Someone may say, ÒAll people are the people of God.Ó In a sense that is true, inasmuch as they are his creatures. Yet, the Scriptures expressly tell us that they are not all his redeemed people. Those who are redeemed by Christ are redeemed Òout of every peopleÓ (Revelation 5:9). The redeemed are GodÕs covenant people, of whom he says, ÒThey shall be my people, and I will be their God.Ó We are his portion and his inheritance, a people near and dear unto him, a people given to Christ to be redeemed and saved by him, of whom it is written, ÒThy people shall be willing in the day of thy powerÓ (Psalm 110:3).

Limited Atonement

Redemption is not universal, but special. By the precious blood of Christ, atonement has been effectually accomplished, and redemption has been obtained for GodÕs elect. Christ is not the Redeemer of all men, but of many. — If the redeemed are those who are the objects of GodÕs special love and favor, then not all men are redeemed. There are some of whom it is said, ÒHe that made them, will not have mercy on them; and he that formed them, will show them no favourÓ (Isaiah 27:11). — If, as the Scriptures teach, the redeemed are the elect of God and them only, then not all men are redeemed, for all are not chosen. ÒThe election hath obtained it, and the rest were blindedÓ (Romans 11:7). — If only those are redeemed for whom Christ became a Surety, then not all men are redeemed. Christ did not engage to pay the debts of all men. — If the redeemed are his people, then not all are redeemed. There are some on whom God writes a ÒLoammiÓ, saying, ÒYe are not my people; and I will not be your GodÓ (Hosea 1:9). — If the redeemed are the sheep of Christ to whom he gives eternal life, then the goats who go into everlasting punishment are not redeemed. — If the redeemed are the children of God and the church and spouse of Christ to whom he gives the gift of faith, then not all men are redeemed, ÒFor all men have not faith!Ó

All honest men and women who read the Bible must acknowledge that the Lord Jesus Christ died for and redeemed his people alone, with the special, effectual purchase price of his own precious blood!

ÒHis PeopleÓ

ÒAnd she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.Ó (Matthew 1:21)

The promise here given is that the Lord Jesus Christ Òshall save his people from their sins.Ó Who are his people? Who are these people specifically designated Òhis people,Ó whom he came into this world specifically to save?

Already His People

Obviously, his people were his people long before he came here to save them. The angel said to Joseph, ÒHe shall save his people from their sins.Ó He did not say, ÒHe shall save those who shall be his people.Ó Whoever his people are, they were his people before he saved them; and they were his people before he came to save them. They were his people from eternity (Psalm 110:3; John 6:39; 10:16).

Not All People are His People

Almost everyone presumes that Christ came here to save everybody. Lost preachers everywhere love to please their lost hearers and tell them exactly what they are hired to tell them: — ÒGod loves you.Ó — ÒJesus died for you.Ó — ÒThe Lord wants to save you.Ó — ÒBut the decision is yours.Ó

That is not what we read in Matthew 1:21. That is not the doctrine of our Holy Scripture. If Christ came to save everyone in the world, if he died for everyone, where is the love of God? If Christ died to redeem and save all men, if he loves all, then his love is meaningless. — Where is the justice of God? If Christ died for all and some yet perish under the wrath of God, the justice of God falls to the ground, for he punishes sin both in the sinner and in his Son. — Where is the immutability of God? If he gave his Son to die for all because of his great love for them, and then sends many to hell, his love changes to wrath. — Where is the divinity of Christ? If he tries to save any he fails to save, he cannot be God.

GodÕs Word

What does the Word of God say? That alone is our standard. If a man does not speak according to the words of the Book, it is because there is no light in him. To teach that Christ came to save those who are lost at last in hell as well as those who are saved is to deny the very deity of Christ. He is not and cannot be God; he is not and cannot be our Savor, if he fails to do what he came to do, if people whom he loves now can become the objects of his wrath later, if his blood does not fully satisfy the justice of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ did not come to save all people everywhere. He came to save his people everywhere, his distinct, peculiar, chosen people. Who are his people? They are his seed (Psalm 22:30; Isaiah 53:10-12), his sheep (John 10:11, 15, 26), his chosen bride (Ephesians 5:25-27), his elect (Ephesians 1:3-6), all who trust him (1 Thessalonians 1:4).

Who are his people? They are those people whom God the Father chose in Christ before the world began, whom he loved with an everlasting love, whom he predestinated unto the adoption of sons from eternity by Jesus Christ to himself, to the praise of the glory of his grace, according to the good pleasure of his own will (Romans 8:28-31).
