God’s Faithfulness I must Proclaim — Don Fortner

1. God’s faithfulness I must proclaim,

His truth and mercy sing. —

All glory to the sacred name

Of Israel’s God and King!

2. He spoke in love, ere time began,

His purposes of grace,

Which formed the glorious gospel plan

To save His chosen race.

3. His promises, Yea and Amen,

Scattered throughout His Word,

I’ve proved, and proved, and proved again,

In Christ His Son, my Lord!

4. God’s faithfulness I must proclaim!

(Jehovah cannot lie!)

His faithfulness my soul sustains

Who for this sinner died!

“He hangeth the earth upon nothing”

Job 26:7

Proclaiming the greatness of our God and our Creator, Job tells us that he hung the earth in space upon nothing. And where he originally hung it, there he providentially keeps it hanging, like a ball in the air, held together by its own gravity. The foundations and pillars (Job 38:4; Psalm 75:3) of it, that which sustains it and holds it together is the will, decree, providence and power of the Almighty.

The Faithfulness of God

Jeremiah 31:35-37

The first 29 chapters of Jeremiah are all about judgment. Israel was a land of sin, idolatry, and apostacy. For these things God brought judgment upon them. Beginning in chapter 30, the Lord God gave his prophet a message of mercy sure, grace indestructible, and salvation certain for his covenant people, God’s true Israel, all the host of his elect.

Absolute Security

Here, the Lord God asserts the absolute security of his elect, the Israel of God, his church, and assures us of it by his great faithfulness. This assurance is given immediately following his declaration of his everlasting covenant of grace (vv. 31-34). Just as God set his bow in the sky to assure Noah that he would never destroy the earth again by a flood of water, the Lord God here promises us that so long as heaven and earth shall stand, so his covenant, his grace, his mercy toward his elect shall never fail — no matter what! The Lord God here tells us that he will never forsake his chosen. He will never cast them off. He will never reject them. He will never turn his back upon them.

“Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever. Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.”

Creation’s Witness

The Lord God here uses extremely strong, moving language. He asserts that we will never lose the ordinances of the sun, moon, and stars, the shining of the sun by day and of the moon and stars by night, as long as time shall stand. These great wonders of creation are mysteries far beyond human understanding. That was true in Jeremiah’s day and it is still true today. No scientist of any kind would ever claim to know the mysteries of the sun, moon, and stars, the expanse of heaven, or the profound of the depths of the earth. No brilliant mind has begun to fathom these mysteries, even today — nor will they ever. But they are God’s constant witnesses to us of his faithfulness to his elect. God says that if you can search them out, then he will admit that he can cast off his people. What a strong affirmation of his love, grace, and faithfulness toward his people!

The point made here is that the people of God will never cease to be the people of God. It doesn’t matter what they do. Be their sins never so great, God will never cease to be their God, looking after them and caring for them. And they shall never cease to be his people. — Why? — Because God is faithful (2 Timothy 2:13; Lamentations 3:21-23).

Oh, my soul, every time my foot touches the earth, every time my face feels the warmeth of the sun, every time my eyes behold the moon and the stars of the sky, every time I hear the roaring sea crashing upon the shore, let me hear my God’s promise of faithfulness.

“He Abideth Faithful”

2 Timothy 2:13

The Lord our God is faithful, always faithful, in all things faithful. This is our confidence in him. We could have no faith in God, we could have no confidence in his Word, we could not believe his promises were he not faithful.

Essential Attribute

Faithfulness is an attribute essential to God, without which he would not be God. It is a most glorious attribute of his nature. — “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him” (Deuteronomy 7:9). God’s faithfulness is, like himself, great and infinite. In the teeth of great pain and sorrow, the weeping prophet cried, “Great is thy faithfulness!” Faithfulness is all around him, like a garment with which he is clothed and covered from head to foot. — “O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee, or to thy faithfulness round about thee?” (Psalm 89:8). God’s faithfulness is immutable, invariable, unchanging, and unchangeable. It has never failed and shall never fail. It is established in the heavens and will continue forever (Psalm 89:2, 24, 33; 119:90). “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful; he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). It is impossible for God to be unfaithful!

Foundation of Trust

God’s faithfulness is the foundation of our trust and confidence in him. He never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forsakes, and never forfeits his Word. Therefore, we may safely and confidently commit ourselves to him and depend upon him for all the mercies he has promised, both in this life and in the life to come (1 Peter 4:19; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). The faithfulness of God is seen, primarily, in the fact that he always performs his Word (Numbers 23:19). — “The foundation of God standeth sure.” And “there shall be a performance of those things which were told (us) from the Lord” (Luke 1:45).

Examples of Faithfulness

Examples of God’s faithfulness are scattered throughout the Bible. More than 4,000 years ago God said, “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). Every year furnishes a fresh witness to God’s faithfulness to his promise. He promised that he would never destroy the earth with the waters of a flood again. And he set the rainbow in the sky to remind us of his faithfulness to his promise (Genesis 9:8-15). In Genesis 15:13-16, God told Abraham that his seed would serve as strangers in a hostile land for four hundred years and afterward come out with great substance. As the centuries ran their course, Abraham’s descendants groaned beneath the load of their bitter affliction in Egypt. Had God forgotten his promise? Had God forgotten to be faithful? Not at all. — “It came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt” (Exodus 12:41). And of Christ it was prophesied, “Righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins and faithfulness the girdle of his reins” (Isaiah 11:5). When Christ came, he faithfully fulfilled all the stipulations of his covenant with the Father as our Mediator and Surety. He brought in everlasting righteousness. He redeemed his people. He put away our sins by the sacrifice of himself. He ascended back into heaven. And there he took his place upon the throne of glory as the God-man, whose name is “Faithful and True!”
