In Scripture the word ÒheartÓ is commonly used, not in reference to that physical organ that pumps blood through the body, but to the seat of our passions, the source of motivation, the inner self of oneÕs being. In all our approaches to God, it is the heart that is required. He says, ÒMy son, give me thine heart.Ó — ÒWith the heart man believeth.Ó Without the heart all acts of religion, all pretenses of faith, and all assertions of conviction are a vain Òshow in the flesh

Nursery Duty Today: ShanteÕ Birchum

All Praise to God Alone Don Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My FatherÕs World —SMD)

1.    All praise to God alone for all that He has done,

The Father, Spirit, and the Son, the Triune God alone!

Our Father, God above, in everlasting love,

Elected and predestined us to life in Christ Jesus.

2.    In the due time Christ came, the Son of God, the Lamb,

To bring in righteousness and die, His own to justify.

And in the time of love, the Spirit (HeavÕnly Dove),

Awakes each chosen, ransomed soul and makes lost sinners whole.

3.    Chosen, redeemed, and called, with GodÕs salvation walled,

Believing God, we are assured that in Christ weÕre secure!

All praise to God alone for all that He has done,

The Father, Spirit, and the Son, the Triune God alone!

ÒThe God of patience and consolationÓ — What a great name for our God. He is patience and he gives consolation. He is long suffering and he gives us comfort by his long suffering. — ÒThe longsuffering of our Lord is salvationÓ (2 Peter 3:15). Let us ever be patient with one another, and long suffering.

Sure Blessedness

ÒI am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.Ó (Romans 15:29)

Faithful gospel preachers are men devoted to the cause of Christ, devoted to Christ, his gospel, his people, and his glory. Such men are, by the blessing of God the Holy Ghost upon them and upon those who hear them, a great source of blessedness to the people they serve.

Paul here expressed great confidence that his preaching at Rome would be blessed of God and that he and GodÕs saints there would be refreshed together in the bonds of Christ.

Mutual Prayer

It is sweet beyond description to a preacher to know that he has an interest in the prayers of those for whom and among whom he labors. Paul knew that the saints at Rome prayed for him incessantly. And he had been enabled of God the Holy Ghost to pray for these Roman believers. And he drew the well-founded conclusion from those facts that he would come to them in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.

When a faithful pastor, the servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, is led and enabled of God to pray for the people he serves, and the people are led and enabled of God to pray for him, the Lord blesses and will bless both preacher and his people by his labor.

How encouraging it is to any preacher to know that he lives in the affections of the people he serves and that they daily go to Court of Heaven to remember him before the Throne of Grace. The thought of this, that the people are at prayer for him, lifts his soul when he hardly knows how to pray for himself.

Assured Blessedness

Paul knew that he would come to Rome in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ, because his heart was there, and God was his witness that without ceasing he prayed for them (Romans 1:9-10). More than that, the Lord himself had assured him that he bear witness of him at Rome (Acts 23:11). It is truly blessed to be carried on the wings of faith and prayer to the Throne of Grace!

How anxious those Roman saints must have been to hear this man sent of God when he came to preach to them! I cannot help thinking that they must have assembled before him much like Cornelius and his household assembled before Peter, saying, ÒNow therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of GodÓ (Acts 10:33).

Therefore, I Òbeseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their workÕs sake. And be at peace among yourselvesÓ (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

ÒThough he slay me, yet will I trust him.Ó

Job 13:15

Pastor Rick Warta

Though our sins deserve punishment, though our own consciences can find no good reason why God should not deal with us as our sins deserve, yet faith reaches within the veil, through the broken body and shed blood of our Savior, and such faith comes to God, though a sinner with empty cup and empty hand, and freely takes and drinks from the water of life that springs from the throne of God because of the blood of Christ (Revelation 22:17; Isaiah 55:1-3). Faith comes with the precious promise that we can come at all times by the blood of Christ (Hebrews 10:19; 1 John 1:7-10; 2:1-2). In so coming, we find sweet assurance that it is well with our souls (Song of Solomon 2:6; Isaiah 40:1-2).

Christ Our Banner

Psalm 60:4

Pastor Clay Curtis

Wherever deceivers seek to lead away disciples after themselves, they create a new banner. It may be a new banner concerning creation, baptismal regeneration, the church, ChristÕs return, end times or anything else manÕs vain imagination can create. But once they have a new banner it becomes the one thing they search Scripture to find. Their goal has ceased to be to exalt Christ our Banner. The new goal is to convince men they have to believe their new banner or else they cannot be saved.

Do not be deceived! They may use great swelling words about believing GodÕs Word. They will surely appear zealous for GodÕs glory and truth. They may even preach some truth concerning Christ. But this they have to do or else their cloak will be discovered for what it is, a cloak of maliciousness.

Still, make no mistake, Christ is no longer their banner. Their new pet doctrine is their banner.

ÒOut of the Mouth of BabesÓ

Pastor Frank Tate

One of our small children told me recently, ÒWe are sin. That is the bad news. The good news is Christ.Ó I thought how simple the gospel really is. We are sin. How sinful are we? Completely. ItÕs not just that we commit sin but we are sin. Sin is what we do and sin is what we love because sin is what we are. ÒFrom the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointmentÓ (Isaiah 1:6). How then is Christ the good news? Christ alone is everything a sinner needs. Christ saves sinners. How completely does Christ save? Christ saves the chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). Christ saves to the uttermost (Hebrews 7:25). Christ saves those who do not deserve it by his grace (Ephesians 2:8). Christ sovereignly saves whom he will and no one can stop His will (Romans 9:15-16). Christ saves fully, eternally, and completely. What good news for sinners!
