Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal ThroneDon Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My FatherÕs World — SMD)

1.     Our sovÕreign God maintains His universal throne;

In heavÕn, and earth, and hell He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whateÕer He please; and none can stay his hand!

2.     All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sovÕreignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But EsauÕs heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3.     What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay,

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will, or say, ÒWhat doest Thou?Ó

Jehovah is the SovÕreign still; and all to Him must bow!

4.     My soul, bow and adore the Lord in all His ways;

His sovÕreignty none can explore; but I will trust His grace!

ÒFor of Him and through Him and to Him are all things:

To Whom be glory evermore! Amen! Amen! Amen!Ó

As you read this sentence, ÒBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,Ó God does not require that you believe this or that system of religion to be saved. He does not require that you have certain feelings or experiences to be saved, or that you do something to be saved. God promises salvation to all who Òbelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ.Ó — ÒDost thou believe on the Son of God?Ó

ÒAfter ThisÓ

Hebrews 9:27

Yes, there is an Òafter this!Ó — ÒAfter this the judgment.Ó Because the righteous Lord loves righteousness, he always deals with all moral creatures upon the basis of strict righteousness, both in the execution of his wrath and in the exercise of his grace (Psalm 11:7). The Judge of all the earth must and shall do right (Genesis 18:25).

Inescapable Fact

The certainty of judgment and eternity, the certainty of eternal salvation and of eternal damnation are things inscribed by God in the conscience of man. You may suppress them and even deny them. But these are facts from which no one can escape, facts all men are conscious of, facts that none can with honesty deny.

And the Judgment Seat of Christ is described for us in very simple, clear, pointed words in Holy Scripture, words that cannot be misunderstood (Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5:10-11; Revelation 20:11-15).

God Always Just

The Lord God, the triune Jehovah, is always just. If God sends you to hell, he will do so upon the grounds of absolute, unquestionable righteousness. If he is pleased to bring you into the everlasting bliss and glory of heaven, he will do so upon the grounds of absolute, unquestionable righteousness. The holy Lord God will never violate, or even bend his holy law. He will not compromise his justice. And when he gets done with us, every creature in heaven, earth, and hell will declare, ÒEven so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgmentsÓ (Revelation 16:7).

Great White Throne

God the Holy Ghost describes that awesome, glorious throne of judgment, before which we all must appear in the last day, as Òa great white throne,Ó to set forth the power, holiness, and sovereignty of the One who sits upon it. It is called ÒgreatÓ because it is the throne of the omnipotent God. It is called ÒwhiteÓ because it is pure, spotless, righteous, and just. Nothing proceeds from this throne but justice and truth. It is called a ÒthroneÓ because the Judge who sits upon it, before whom we all must stand, is the holy, sovereign Lord God. — It is ÒChrist who died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and the living.Ó

No Fear

In the last day, when time shall be no more, we all must appear before the august, great, white throne to be judged of God, to be judged according to the strict and exact righteousness and justice of the thrice holy God!

Yet, while the Word of God constantly warns the wicked of the terror of divine judgment and the everlasting wrath of God, the Day of Judgment is never described as a terror to the believer, or even as a thing to be dreaded by us. Rather, for the believer, the Day of Judgment is always set forth as a matter of anticipated joy and glory.

On this earth GodÕs saints are constantly misjudged. His servants are maligned and slandered by reprobate men. But in that last great day, God almighty will vindicate his people, and he will vindicate his servants (1 Corinthians 4:3-5).

I am not dreading that day. IÕm looking forward to it! And I do so with peace. If, as a believer, a sinner saved by GodÕs free and sovereign grace, through the sin-atoning blood and perfect righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ, you understand what the Bible says about that great day, you will look forward to it too.

For all who trust the Lord Jesus Christ, judgment is over. We were judged for our sins at Calvary (John 16:8-11; Romans 8:1). And we have been made the righteousness of God in Christ. In the person of our Savior, in union with him, we perfectly obeyed God. We are Òjustified by the faith of ChristÓ (Galatians 2:16). In the Day of Judgment the triune Jehovah shall show all the universe the righteousness and justice of our everlasting salvation Òto the praise of the glory of his graceÓ (Jeremiah 50:20).

Not a Drop in Vain

Pastor Clay Curtis

Not a drop of rain or flake of snow is wasted. It matters not if man sees it or not. A single droplet of rain fallen in the desert accomplishes GodÕs purpose as much as a torrential downpour in a rainforest. Every drop has a mission and with every drop it is mission accomplished. So it is with GodÕs Word. — ÒFor as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent itÓ (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Liberty or Legalism

Galatians 5:1

Pastor John Chapman

I can have liberty in Christ or I can have legalism by the law; but, I cannot have both. Law and grace never mix. The salvation of the soul is not a mixture of ChristÕs obedience and my obedience (so-called). If I do anything to help save my soul, then Christ is of no value to me; in fact, He becomes useless to me in salvation.

The Word of God says, ÒIf the Son shall therefore make you free, ye shall be free indeedÓ (John 8:36). The Word of God never says anything about the law making a person free. Why? Because the law never sets the guilty free. Only in Jesus Christ is a sinner set free, justified, and cleared of all charges by his obedience and the sacrifice of his death. In Christ alone is the sinner holy, just, and free from all condemnation.
