Grace Baptist Church of Danville

November 5, 2015

Some make Òmother earthÓ their god and their gospel. They have dust for a god and ashes for a gospel. Bowing so low and cramped with pain from such a debasing stoop, it is little wonder that they behave as madmen.

Nursery Duty This Week

Jayalita McCormack (AM) — Diane Campbell (PM) Tuesday: Shelby Fortner

Behold, the Wisdom of our God! Don Fortner

(Tune: #400 — Jesus, and Shall it Ever Be? —LM)

1.    Faith all JehovahÕs works surveys,

With wonder, joy, and thankful praise;

But His salvation best proclaims

The powÕr and wisdom of His name.

2.    In Jesus blood atonement see

The wisdom of the Sacred Three:

Now God the just can justify

The guilty soul for whom Christ died!

3.    Behold that penetrating grace

That quickens all the chosen race,

Subdues the vile, imparts the good, —

This is the work of our great God!

4.    To new create a soul like mine,

Demands wisdom and powÕr divine.

Saved by free grace through JesusÕ blood: —

Behold, the Wisdom of our God!

Believers are motivated in their lives by the grace of God. Gratitude for grace experienced inspires saved sinners to live for the glory of God. The love of Christ for us, that love which causes the Son of God to devote himself entirely to us, that love of God for us made manifest in his sin-atoning sacrifice at Calvary, constrains every saved sinner to seek grace that he may utterly devote himself to Christ. O Spirit of God, give me that grace, every hour of every day, for ChristÕs sake!

Preach to the Whole Man

Pastor Henry Mahan

There is a danger of talking more about salvation than about the Savior. There is a danger of preaching redemption and neglecting to preach the Redeemer. It could be that we know much about justification and little about Jesus Christ, his person and his work. One thing is certain, a man will arrive at right doctrine through Christ, but it is also possible for him to have orthodox doctrine and yet not know Christ. The gospel is not a collection of dry doctrines; it is the revelation of a living, merciful, and ever-present Lord.

Men and women are not going to come to hear you preach the doctrines of grace. But if needy sinners get wind of the fact that you are preaching the grace of Christ, they will give you a hearing. When you only preach to my head in facts so numerous and terms so tedious, you weary me, and forget that I am a human with emotions and a hungry heart! I laugh, I cry, I love, I feel, I sorrow, I doubt, I fear, and I need a minister with whom I can identify in all these, who has the message of GodÕs mercy; not cold, calculated creeds which ignore these human traits.

The Arminian cheerleader sings joyful hymns, weeps, laughs, rejoices, and calls for men to commit themselves to a movement with no message of hope nor assurance. The Calvinistic professor stands rigidly in his pulpit of pious orthodoxy, daring not to weep lest he be called emotional, daring not to laugh lest he be thought frivolous, daring not to call mourners or seekers lest he be called a free-willer, daring not to let people know him or get close to him lest he lose their respect and awe. Someone may find out he is only a sinner saved by grace.

Lord, deliver me from having to listen to either one of them, and send me an Elijah of like passions who will minister to my heart and to my head — to the whole man.Ó

The Lord our God takes pleasure in using Òbroken piecesÓ (Acts 27:44). In fact, it might be right to say, with regard to the people the Lord uses as instruments of good to his elect, he only uses Òbroken pieces.Ó Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds, are relieved by falling water, which makes the ground below more fruitful.

Catastrophes

Missionary Daniel Parks

Catastrophes evoke the best in some people but the worst in others. Some thank God for being merciful to them, and go to aid others. They will receive their gracious reward (Matthew 25:31ff; Hebrews 6:10; 13:15f). Some continue to disregard God, but nevertheless go to aid others. Their benevolence will commend them to men, but not to the God they disregard. Some curse God for inconveniencing them, or go to prey on others. God, being just and righteous, will curse them and make prey of them if they do not repent. Of which sort are you and me?

ÒOf Him, and Through Him, and To HimÓ

Romans 11:36

The Lord our God created all things, rules all things, and disposes of all things exactly as he will. It is our God himself who upholds the world as it now is by his ever-present, omnipotent hand. Our heavenly Father is present everywhere and in all things. The Triune Jehovah alone maintains and orders this world.

And the ultimate purpose of all things is the glory of God. Every creature and every event of this creation will soon prove to be for the glory of the Creator (Psalm 76:10; Proverbs 16:4; Isaiah 45:7). Let us take courage from this. Bad as things sometimes appear, the glory of God shall be accomplished in his creation.

Of Him

Here is an even more blessed fact. — In the grand work of salvation and grace God is all in all. All things in salvation are Òof him, and through him, and to him.Ó It was God who devised, ordained, and purposed the salvation of chosen sinners by Christ. No one but God could have devised a plan of salvation that is so just to God and so safe to man as that which is proclaimed in the gospel. God ordained salvation by a Substitute. God ordained justification by the shedding of innocent blood. God ordained redemption by Christ.

God ordained the time when the first gospel promise would be given. God set the hour when the Redeemer would come (Galatians 4:4). God determined the people to whom the gospel would be preached. God ordained the people he would call. He set the time when his elect would be molded according to his will. He fixed the time and the place of our calling. He determined the pains of conviction which each of his chosen ones would endure. He ordained the time when faith would come.

Through Him

But we do not stop here. Not only is salvation of God in its plan. — Salvation is through him in its accomplishment. In his time the Savior was born. At the appointed hour our dear Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, made satisfaction for sin by his death upon the cursed tree. And by the power of his omnipotent mercy and irresistible grace, God the Holy Ghost regenerates and effectually calls each chosen, redeemed sinner to life and faith in Christ.

Not only did God plan our salvation, he also accomplished it, for our salvation is through him. Salvation is not a work of man, nor is it a work of God and man together. Salvation is accomplished in our hearts by the power of God. We are born-again by the power of God. We pray by the power of God. We are preserved by the power of God. We are sanctified by the power of God. We will be glorified by the power of God.

To Him

Because the grand work of salvation is of him and through him, it shall be to him alone. Let the Lord our God alone be praised. In the salvation of our souls he is the Alpha and the Omega! If I am a believer, it is because of God, only because of God. It is our great joy to proclaim that our salvation is to God. The purpose of God in saving sinners by Christ is the glory of his own name. Salvation, if it is a work of God, through God, and to God, is altogether a work of free, sovereign, eternal, and unchanging grace. — To him be glory forever! Amen.
