Any doctrine that is built by piecing together verses of Scripture is false doctrine. Divine truth is plainly revealed.

Touching the Hem of Christ's GarmentDon Fortner

(Tune: When All Thy Mercies, O My God #11 —CM)

1.    O sin-sick souls, dismiss your fears,

Come halt, the blind, the lame,

Come, touch the garment Jesus wears,

ThereÕs healing in His name.

2.    Till sick of evÕry other way,

YouÕll neÕer to Jesus go;

Whose words eternal life convey,

Whose wounds with pardon flow.

3.    Though crushed with guilt, trembling with fear,

And sad beyond degree;

Still, in this garment Jesus wears

ThereÕs healing full and free!

4.    Come, stretch the witherÕd hand today,

For Christ is passing by;

Your case will not allow delay;

Unless you touch, you die.

5.    One touch of this celestial robe

Speaks pardon to the soul;

When sins more weighty than the globe

Across the conscience roll.

6.    Through evÕry crowd to Jesus press

When sin torments your mind;

Peace, pardÕning blood, and righteousness,

In His dear name youÕll find!

ÒAs Far as the East is from the WestÓ

Missionary Daniel Parks

GodÕs people confidently declare in Psalm 103:12, ÒAs far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us

It is significant that the psalmist spoke of the distance from the west to the east, not from the north to the south. On Earth, the distance from the west to the east is – unlike the distance from the north to the south – immeasurable. This is because Earth is a sphere with magnetic extremities at its north and south poles, but having no magnetic poles identifying its eastern and western extremities.

To measure the distance from the north to the south on Earth, go to the North Pole, where your compass points only southward regardless of which direction you face. Then go southward until your compass points only northward regardless of which direction you face, which means you have reached the South Pole. The distance between these two poles is the distance from the north to the south on Earth.

But if you go to a place on Earth between those two poles and follow your compass either eastward or westward in order to measure the distance between the east and the west, you will do so forever!

Believer, So far has God removed our transgressions from us!

ÒAs Far as the East is from the WestÓ

C. H. Spurgeon

ÒFor as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear himÓ (Psalm 103:11). Immeasurable mercy, illimitable grace, blessed be his holy name! ÒAs far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from usÓ (Psalm 103:12). They are gone. There is a chasm between us and our sins, which will never be bridged. To an infinite distance has the great Scapegoat carried away all the sins of his people; they shall never return to us. I cannot tell how much we ought to bless him. It is not merely pardon of a temporary character that is given to us, but our sin is carried right away into a land of forgetfulness, so that it will never come back again to us. ÒWho shall lay anything to the charge of GodÕs elect? It is God that justifieth

ÒAs Far as the East is from the WestÓ

Psalm 103:12

If there were some precise point of distance from the East to the West, it must follow that there is some place where our sins may be found (Psalm 103:12), they are not really taken away, they may yet be found by God and charged to us, Christ is a failure, redemption is a hoax, and the gospel we preach is a delusion.

Rejoice, O my soul, rejoice! — There is no place where my sins are found. The Lord Jesus Christ purged them, removed them, took them all away. Children of God, rejoice! — Your SaviorÕs precious blood washed away our sins. Jehovah has cast them behind his back. He who knows all things and forgets nothing has forgotten them forever. And in that great day when he searches the books, they shall not be found (Jeremiah 50:20).

ÒI Magnify My OfficeÓ

Romans 11:13

GodÕs servants, gospel preachers, pastors, and missionaries, like the apostle Paul, are responsible to magnify the office in which the Lord God has placed them as his servants. But how?

      How does a man magnify his office as GodÕs ambassador to immortal souls? — Not by wearing clerical garb! — Not by elevating himself above others, making Romish divisions between clergy and laity! — Not by wearing titles like ÒReverend,Ó ÒDoctor,Ó or ÒFather!Ó — Not by refusing to dirty his hands with menial tasks! — Not by refusing to do the same work other men do!

Honor God

Faithful men magnify their office as GodÕs servants by seeking in all things GodÕs glory in the salvation of his elect, by subjecting all things to this great endeavor. They avoid meaningless debates, speculations, vain questions, and strife about words. And they seek to live blamelessly before men, adorning the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

Preach the Gospel

And gospel preachers magnify their office as GodÕs ambassadors to your soul by faithfully preaching the gospel. A preacher is known best by his most obvious oddity. I want to be known not for oddities of my own making, but for the oddity God has trusted to me. — The gospel of Christ! — The offense of the cross!

      When people speak my name or even think of it, friends or foes, I want them to immediately associate it with Christ crucified, Sovereignty, Substitution, and Satisfaction, Predestination, Election, Limited Atonement, and Irresistible Grace.

Handle Honestly

GodÕs servant magnifies his office by handling the Word of God honestly, by preaching the message of Holy Scripture as it is given in the Book of God ((1 Corinthians 4:1-2; 2 Corinthians 4:1-2). A man handles the Word of God deceitfully when he pieces portions of Scripture together to make the Bible say what he wants it to say. Any doctrine built by cutting up pieces of Scripture and then piecing them together is false doctrine. When God has a message to convey, he conveys it in plain, obvious language. We honor the Scriptures, when, like Nehemiah of old, we read the Book distinctly, give out the sense, and cause the people to whom we preach to understand the reading (Nehemiah 8:8).

      God has not trusted the treasure of the gospel to this earthen vessel so that I can prove facts, display intellect, and dazzle men with strange, novel, meaningless nonsense! God has entrusted me with the gospel that I may preach it for the salvation, comfort, and edification of his elect to the glory of God.

      It is the responsibility of GodÕs servant to magnify his office by sticking to his business. — ÒGo into all the world and preach the gospel!Ó The Book of God is all about the person, work, and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. That means that if we handle the Word of God honestly we find the things of Christ in the Book and show him in all the Scriptures.
