1. Eternal Spirit, heav’nly Wind,

Breathe on Your slain (These dead in sin!),

Bid the dry scattered bones revive,

And make the dead in sin alive.

Sin is a noun. It is what I am. Sin is a verb. It is what I do. Sin is an adjective. It describes me. Sin is an adverb. It describes what I do. Thank God for the promise of the gospel. — “Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). — Pastor Todd Nibert

Salvation Promised to Faith

Romans 10:13

If you would be saved, you must call upon the name of the Lord. The way of salvation is set before us in very plain, simple language. — “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Paul is telling us that a personal acknowledgement of God and trust in God as he is revealed in Christ is the way to obtain salvation. Look at the verse more closely.

A Broad Word

Here is a very broad word — “Whosoever.” It is my understanding that when making a will, if you want to leave everything you own to one person, it is best to simply say, “I leave my entire estate to Shelby Fortner,” and not mention any particulars, lest you leave something out. This is what God does here. — “Whosoever.”

“Whosoever” includes you and me. Anyone of any age, condition, or character in the whole wide world who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Those who call upon the name of the Lord have been called by the Lord (Joel 2:32). The Lord called upon, the Lord by whom alone sinners are saved, is Jesus of Nazareth, our Lord Jesus, who is the Christ. There is no other God; and there is no other Savior (Acts 2:31).

The grace of God is not restricted to any race, nationality, or social class. It is better to read “whosoever” than to read “Donald Stewart Fortner.” “Whosoever” draws a circle around the globe and includes everyone.

A Simple Word

Here is a very simple word — “Call.” The smallest child knows what that means. A little boy falls down and bruises his knees, or scratches his hands, and with tearful eyes, looks up to his daddy. That look is a call. The boy is saying, “Daddy, help me. I’m hurting. And I know you can help.” The call itself implies faith in the one called upon. Sometimes the call is vocal. Sometimes it is silent (Luke 18:13; Matthew 8:25; Matthew 14:30; Luke 8:44).

A Sure Word

Here is a sure word — “Shall.” There is not an “if” in the text. There are no conditions to be met. There are no qualifications. — “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” This word is as sure as the throne of the eternal God.

A Precious Word

Here is a precious word — “Saved.” To be saved is to have life, eternal life. To be saved is to be pardoned of all sin, acquitted from all charges, cleared of all guilt. To be saved is to be accepted, favored, received by God. To be saved is to be a child of God (1 John 3:1-3). To be saved is to be an heir of God and joint-heir with Christ.

If you call upon the name of the Lord, you shall be saved, immediately and eternally saved. But you must call upon the name of the Lord yourself.

Pause, my soul, over the scriptural account of this solemn transaction! Think how infinitely important in the sight of Jehovah was, and is, that vast sacrifice of the Lamb of God “slain from the foundation of the world,” which every day, morning and evening, the Lord commanded to be set forth in an offering made by fire.

With what exactness did the church observe this daily rite of oblation! How scrupulous were all true Israelites in this service! How fully did it proclaim to them the doctrine that “without shedding of blood there was no remission!” Who that reads the solemn precept and observes the strictness of Israel in their obedience to it, but must be struck with this conviction? And who can for a moment doubt but that the whole was performed by faith in the Lamb of God, who, in after ages, did away all the penal effects of sin by the sacrifice of himself?

Pause again, my soul. Hath this daily sacrifice ceased, as the prophet Daniel declared it should? (Daniel 9:27) Are the lamb of the morning and the lamb of the evening now no more? Wherefore? Because the thing signified being accomplished, the sign is needed to minister no longer. The substance being come, the shadow is forever done away. And shall not thy morning and thine evening act of faith be expressly exercised upon this one Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world?

Did the faithful Israelite at nine in the morning, and three in the evening, (the hours of those daily sacrifices) offer the lamb by faith in the promised Redeemer? And shall not the believing followers of the blessed Jesus have their hours of commemoration in spiritual acts of praise and faith upon the bleeding body of him, who by the one offering of himself, once offered, hath forever perfected them that are sanctified?

Yes, thou precious Lamb of God! I would pray for grace to behold thee in every act of faith, in every offering of prayer, every ordinance, every means of grace, and all the rites of religious worship. I would see thee through the whole of the Bible as the one thing, the only thing signified. I would trace the sweet, the blessed, the soul-comforting, soul-strengthening, soul-transforming subject, until, from the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, I followed the Lamb whithersoever he went; until I beheld thee, as the beloved apostle saw thee, “the Lamb as it had been slain, in the midst of the throne,” still wearing on thy glorified body the marks of our redemption. And there, precious Jesus, should my eyes fix, and my heart center all her joys, because also in this exalted state thou art still the Lamb. Thy glory and thy power have made no change of nature, though of place. Thou art the Lamb of God, and the Brother of thy people still. The eternal efficacy of thy blood and righteousness, and the everlasting love in thine heart towards thy redeemed are the same. As in person, so in office, thou art “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Amen.
