Grace Baptist Church of Danville

June 18, 2017

Believers have the Holy Spirit given to them in all his fulness at the new birth. He is given as our Comforter, our Guide, our Teacher, and our Seal. To be full of him is simply to be full of his influence, comforted by his presence, guided by his power, instructed by his wisdom, and assured by his grace, having Òthe love of God shed abroad in our heartsÓ by him, by his gift of life and faith in Christ.

A Guilty Debtor, Vile and Poor Don Fortner

(Tune: #44 — Amazing Love —LM)

1.    A guilty debtor, vile and poor,

I bowed and knocked at MercyÕs Door.

Knowing my debt, I could not pay,

I feared I must be turned away.

But Christ, Who died my soul to save,

In mercy free, my debt forgave!

He Who my debt had fully paid

Would not His ransomed turn away.

2.    His sovÕreign grace shall be my boast,

For I am bound to love Him most.

I owed the most! — Nothing could pay!

But Christ took all my sin away!

IÕll triumph in redeeming love,

When I ascend to Heaven above,

And sing in HeavÕnÕs eternal day,

Christ paid my debt and bought my way!

ÒSalvation is of the Lord!Ó — It was purposed by God the Father for those he chose in Christ before this world was created. It was accomplished by the perfect redeeming work of Christ our Savior, the eternal Son of God, when he died on that cross in our room and stead 2,000 years ago. This unspeakable gift, this glorious salvation, is revealed to GodÕs chosen people by the sovereign, life-giving power of God the Holy Spirit under the preaching of his gospel.

ÒThe Blood Shall be to You for a TokenÓ

Exodus 12:13

The Scriptures speak constantly about the blood. It is written in the books of the law, ÒThe life of the flesh is in the blood.Ó God told Moses, ÒThe blood shall be to you for a token.Ó He said, ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó When the high priest went into the holy of holies on the Day of Atonement, he went in with blood. No man can come to God without blood atonement.

When our blessed Savior instituted the LordÕs Supper, he took the cup of wine, held it before his disciples and said, ÒThis is the blood of the New Testament, shed for many for the remission of sins.Ó In Hebrews 9:22, we read, ÒWithout shedding of blood is no remission.Ó That makes the blood a matter of infinitely immense importance.

These days, it is common for preachers, churches, theologians, and hymn writers to say as little as possible about the blood. We have become so educated, refined, and sophisticated that talking about blood is considered improper, unsophisticated, and rude. But it is still true that Òwithout shedding of blood is no remission.Ó The whole of GodÕs revelation of himself, the whole of the gospel, the whole of salvation is wrapped up in the blood, the precious, sin-atoning blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 1:18-21).

ÒWhat can wash away my sins? Nothing, but the blood of Jesus!

What can make me whole again? Nothing, but the blood of Jesus!

Oh! Precious is the flow that makes me white as snow!

No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus!Ó

The shedding of ChristÕs precious blood was and is absolutely essential to the saving of our souls. Let us ever cherish the blood of Christ as that which is precious above all things.

The grace of God is called Òfree,Ó because it is free for God to give to whom he pleases. John Berridge

ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó

Exodus 12:13

This is the greatest promise that a man on earth can ever have from God on his throne. This is the greatest promise that a man can realize. What is the Lord God saying here? He is saying ÒWhen I deal in judgment with Egypt, I will deal in mercy with you.Ó That is what he is saying to us in this passage: ÒWhen I deal in judgment with the worldÕs sin, when I come in wrath, judgment, and condemnation upon this world; I will cover you with my grace. When I execute my wrath against sin, I am going to extend my mercy to you.Ó — ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó

When this promise was given, an angry God was walking through the streets of Egypt. With sword drawn and sharpened for slaughter, God was walking through the streets of Egypt that midnight and slaying the first-born in every house.

God came in judgment, falling upon the land of Egypt and destroying the pride of every household, the joy of every home, and the firstborn of every family from PharaohÕs Palace to the maid behind the mill, to the cattle in the barn and the cattle in the field.

Will God smite all? Will he condemn all? Will he destroy all? No. In wrath, he remembers mercy! With the voice of mercy, he speaks. — ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó God in judgment walking through the streets of Egypt, God in wrath, God dealing with sin and rebellion, speaks to a few among many, a nation within a nation, and says, ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó

Saved and Safe

GodÕs people are safe. GodÕs people are chosen, redeemed, called, and saved. And they are safe. They are secure. There is no judgment that can come upon them. Why are GodÕs people safe? Because God said, ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over youÓ (Romans 8:1, 33-34).

Four Reasons

Why are GodÕs elect safe? Let me give you four reasons.

1st — GodÕs people are safe because we are in his heart. He said, ÒI have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn thee.Ó GodÕs people are safe because they are in his heart. It is in his heart to save them. It is in his heart to keep them. It is in his heart to sustain them. It is in his heart to protect them.

2nd — Not only are we in his heart, we are in his hand. Our Lord Jesus Christ said; ÒMy sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my FatherÕs hand.Ó GodÕs saints are in his hand. No one can get to them. They are secure and they are safe. When the angry God stalked through the land of Egypt at midnight, and that horrible, bitter, wailing was heard in Egypt, a cry such had never been heard before and such as has never been heard since, GodÕs people were safe because they were in his heart and in his hand. — Not only thatÉ

3rd — They were in his covenant. He said; ÒThis shall be the covenant that I will makeÉI will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my peopleÉfor I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.Ó

4th — GodÕs people are safe because they are in his Son. — ÒThere is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus.Ó GodÕs elect are safe. When the Lord God comes in judgment, in providential judgment upon any nation, any house, or any age, and when he comes in the final judgment of that great day, when the elements being on fire shall melt with a fervent heat, GodÕs elect are safe, because we are in Christ, and God has promised, When I see the blood, I will pass over you!Ó
