Neither tongue nor pen can adequately describe and/or communicate the beauties and glories which are found in the redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God alone can open a man’s eyes to behold that vision. Well does the writer of Hebrews say “we see Jesus”. For apart from that gift of heavenly vision the gospel is just another accounting of the facts of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. A glorious account to be sure but lacking in the vital substance which takes it from the dogma of religion to the very substance of life itself. Until the life of Christ is bestowed in the new birth a man cannot see the kingdom of God. Indeed, he has tasted death that we in turn might have life.

Delighting in God’s Law

Romans 7:22

The preaching of the letter declares sinners can and must keep the law given at Mt. Sinai. One way the letter kills is by sin deceiving men into thinking they can keep the letter of the law, as it once deceived the apostle Paul. (Romans 7: 11). “Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just and good.” (Romans7: 12) “Wherefore” refers to the prior verses where Christ made Paul hear the law declare Paul’s law-keeping as only sin and death. “Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just and good,” not because it tells me I am holy, just and good, but because even after all my very best effort to keep the law it declares I am not.

Substitution

Substitution is not a take it or leave it gospel. Substitution is the gospel! As the God-man, Jesus Christ walked on this earth in perfect obedience to the will of God the Father, establishing a perfect righteousness for his chosen people. As the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ satisfied the holy justice of God for his elect by laying down his life for them. As God’s risen, glorified, exalted King, Jesus Christ now lives to give eternal life to all who were given to him by God the Father (John 17:1-3). Jesus Christ is the sinner’s only hope, who has already entered within the veil, there to appear in the presence of God for those he purchased with his own precious blood. Flee to him for refuge, and lay hold upon the only sure hope for sinners (Hebrews 6:17 - 20).

The Solitariness of God

“Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Exodus 15:11)

In saving his people, the Lord God sets himself apart from all his creatures and from all the imaginary gods of men, showing himself to be God alone, doing wonders, wonders of grace in the earth. That which separates and distinguishes God from all his creatures is his solitariness as God. It is the solitary excellence of God that inspires reverence for him, faith in him, and obedience to him. Our God is incomprehensibly great! Here are seven things about God which show his solitariness, seven things which distinguish him from and set him apart from all his creatures, infinitely.

1. There is one God. — It must be stated and stated emphatically that there is one God, and only one (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Corinthians 8:6; 1 Timothy 2:5; Ephesians 4:4-6). God alone is solitary in his Being. He “only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen nor can see; to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen” (1 Timothy 6:16).

2. God is eternal. — “In the beginning God.” In the beginning there was nothing and no one but God. There was a “time” before time began, when God dwelt alone in the ineffable glory of his own great Being. He is the great “I AM,” “the eternal God,” who says, “I live forever!” — “Thy throne is established of old; thou art from everlasting” (Psalm 93:2). He is the first and the last, “the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity” (Isaiah 57:15).

3. God is Spirit. — Our Lord Jesus Christ declares, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in Spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).As you read the Bible you cannot fail to notice that never once were men given any kind of physical, visible, tangible representation of God’s Being. Why? Because God is Spirit. He is the infinite, incomprehensible, invisible, omnipresent Spirit.

4. God is a Tri-Unity (1 John 5:7). — We worship One God in the Trinity or Tri-Unity of his sacred Persons. We do not have three Gods. But we have One God, who subsists in three distinct Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. And these three Persons, equal in all things, are one God.

5. God is independent and self-sufficient. — God alone needs nothing. In old eternity, when God dwelt alone in the glory of his Triune Persons, he was self-contained and self-sufficient, in need of nothing. He needed nothing to make him happy, glorious, and complete. And he is still independent, self-sufficient, in need of nothing. The creation of the world added nothing to God. He is immutable. He changes not (Malachi 3:6). His essential glory could never be increased or diminished.

6. God can be known only by revelation. — No sinner will ever see and know the living God until God reveals himself in the sinner’s heart by the irresistible grace and power of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 4:6).

7. God alone forgives sin freely (Micah 7:18-20). — Only the one true and living God forgives sinners freely, without any reparations being made by the one forgiven (Romans 3:24).
