Grace Baptist Church of Danville

August 28, 2016

The preacherÕs business is to proclaim the greatness, grace, and glory of the Triune Jehovah as he has revealed himself in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The faithful exposition of Holy Scripture is the preaching of Jesus Christ and him crucified. Everything else called preaching is just beating the air.

Hail, Sovereign Grace, Eternal, Free!Don Fortner

(Tune: #400 — Jesus, and Shall It Ever Be? — LM)

1.    Hail, sovereign grace, eternal free,

So bountifÕly bestowed on me!

Grace chose me in eternity,

And sent my Lord to die for me!

2.    ÔTwas grace, GodÕs free and sovereign grace,

That stopped me as to hell I raced,

And sweetly forced me to confess

My sin so vile, my wretchedness!

3.    Grace gave me eyes and made me see

What Christ, my Lord, has done for me.

He ransomed me with His own blood,

And reconciled me to my God.

4.    Let heavÕn and earth my song now hear,

Come, ransomed sinners, sing with cheer —

Hail, sovereign grace, eternal, free,

So bountifÕly bestowed on me!

Without Honor, Double Honor, Proper Honor

Matthew 13:57, 1 Timothy 5:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:13

Men and women look upon GodÕs servants with greatly varying attitudes. Some give them no honor. Others set them upon pedestals and almost idolize them. What should a believerÕs attitude be toward those men who faithfully labor in the work of the Gospel for the benefit of his immortal soul?

Without Honor

Our Lord Jesus tells us plainly that Òa prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own houseÓ (Matthew 13:57). Those people among whom our Savior labored, his own neighbors and kinsmen, were offended by the Son of God because of his doctrine, and looked upon him with contempt, giving him no honor. Because they were very familiar with him, they did not esteem him above anyone else.

Our Lord turned this fact into a point of needful instruction to his followers. He tells us that GodÕs prophets are commonly more highly esteemed by people who live at a distance from them. Every faithful man, in every age and society, has experienced this sad and painful fact (2 Kings 2:23). In this modern age of electronic communication and ease of travel, a preacher is commonly known by many who live far from him, and is often admired by those who see him face to face only a few times a year. Those same people, if they lived near and regularly attended that manÕs ministry, would soon cease to honor him.

I learned long ago that it is much easier to be a personÕs pastor if he lives a thousand miles away, than it is if he lives next door. As long as he lives at a distance, a man has no sense of responsibility to the church or its pastor, and does not have to fit in with the family.

Double Honor

The Spirit of God tells us that pastors who rule the house of God well, Òespecially they who labor in the word and doctrine,Ó are to be Òcounted worthy of double honorÓ (1 Timothy 5:17). The word translated ÒhonorÓ means Òvalue, pay, preciousness, esteem, and dignity.Ó That means that the man who faithfully labors for your soul is to be counted by you as one worthy of ÒdoubleÓ the honor you heap upon him, one to whom you cannot give sufficient honor.

Proper Honor

1st Thessalonians 5:13 tells us precisely what our attitude ought to be with regard to GodÕs servants. — ÒEsteem them very highly in love for their workÕs sake.Ó Let every saved sinner in every Gospel church highly esteem his own pastor in love, realizing that his pastor (if he is GodÕs servant) devotes his life to the work of the Gospel for the everlasting salvation of those he serves. Give that same love and high esteem to all GodÕs servants known to you, for ChristÕs sake.

Such high esteem is proper honor to faithful men. It is honoring to God and honoring to the Gospel. And this high esteem is the secret to peace in GodÕs church. Where it is found, there is Òpeace among yourselves.Ó Where this proper esteem is not found, in any local church, there is turmoil.

ÒFear Not, Neither Be DiscouragedÓ

Deuteronomy 1:21

If he who is our God is the eternal ÒI AM,Ó if we trust him who is ÒI AM THAT I AM,Ó we have nothing to fear in this world, or in the world to come. No wonder our Savior says so often to his people, ÒFear not!Ó Read again what God said to the children of Israel, when he sent them forth to conquer Canaan and possess it forever (Deuteronomy 1:21; 20:1-3; 31:6-8).

Shall we fret and fear, shall we murmur and complain before our God? — Fret because our God is so great? — Fear because our Savior is so immense? — Murmur because our Redeemer is so strong? — Complain because his riches are unsearchable? What folly! What unbelief!

His treasures are such that gold is but dust in his deep mines! The riches of his grace fall like manna before our tent doors every day. May God the Holy Ghost allow us to drink the refreshing waters of this bottomless, ever-springing artesian well. — ÒI AM THAT I AM.Ó O Spirit of God, show us the things of Christ.

MYSTERY

Pastor Bruce Crabtree

One of the great mysteries of the Gospel is how God can be just and justify a sinner. Anybody who knows anything about the character of God realizes He is Holy. ÒHoly, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Host.Ó God will never, neither could he, justify a single sin. ÒEvery transgression and disobedience received a just recompense (penalty, punishment) of rewardÓ (Hebrews 2:2). God will punish sins. He must do it or cease to be a Holy God. Not one sin shall escape his Holy eye and his glittering sword of justice. And God has punished sins. He did it in his incarnate Son, Jesus Christ our Lord on CalvaryÕs tree. He was smitten of God and afflicted. For the transgression of his people he was stricken. Sin has been punished and put away in a manner in which justice is absolutely and eternally satisfied. Now God can, for the sake of Christ, save, justify, forgive, be merciful etc. The good news of the gospel is this: ÒEvery sin will be adequately punished; blessed be God, not every sinner.Ó

Limited Atonement

No point of Gospel doctrine is more clearly and irrefutably revealed in Holy Scripture than the blessed, sweet revelation of limited atonement (particular and effectual redemption). The whole of the Gospel stands or falls with this. Either the Lord Jesus Christ actually redeemed all for whom he died, or he is not God, but an imposter and a failure; and we are yet in our sins. Blessed be his name, he who is God our Savior is the Christ who is God; and he has redeemed all for whom he died (all GodÕs elect) from the curse of the law. And all his redeemed ones must and shall be saved, because they are redeemed.
