Godliness is living for God. Godliness is devotion to Christ. It can never be measured, recognized, or understood by the ungodly.

Revive my Soul! Revive my Faith! Don Fortner

(Tune: #42 — All Hail the Power of JesusŐ Name —CM)

1.    O Holy Spirit, let me know

The love of Christ to me!

Its soul reviving powŐr bestow,

To set my spirit free!

2.    I long to know its depth and height,

Its boundless length and breadth,

Drink from this ocean of delight,

And plunge into its depth!

3.    BlessŐd Comforter Divine, reveal

The SaviorŐs wondrous love!

Oh, set upon my heart Your seal,

Of covŐnant grace and love!

4.    Your grace and powŐr to me impart,

And be my constant Guide!

Revive my soul! Revive my faith! —

ŇThe Lord be magnified!Ó

ŇFrom Such withdraw ThyselfÓ

1 Timothy 6:3-5

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ produces a humble and loving spirit; but religion without Christ (even though quite orthodox) fills the mind with pride, vanity, and self-esteem. These people often spend their time in controversy, disputes, and strife over words, ordinances, laws, church discipline, and government. Their ministry and contact with others produce quarrels and dissension, insults and suspicion, envy and jealousy. "From such withdraw thyself." The true grace of God holds and proclaims the gospel of His glory in the spirit of our Lord and will bring His people together in righteousness, joy, and peace.          — Pastor Henry Mahan

An Elect Remnant

Isaiah 1:9

ŇThere is a remnant according to the election of graceÓ (Romans 11:5). God will not save all men. It never was his intention, purpose, design, or desire to save all men. But God has chosen some, a remnant, according to the election of grace. And that elect remnant shall be saved.

The Lord God, from eternity, has chosen to save some of AdamŐs fallen race, which he calls a remnant. None of us deserve GodŐs mercy. We all deserve GodŐs wrath, because we are all sinners. Had it not been for GodŐs eternal election of some to salvation in Christ for the glory of his name, we would all have perished long ago under the wrath of God (Isaiah 1:2-9).

Election

Isaiah tells us that manŐs sin is so great and the justice of God is so inflexible and strict that had it not been for GodŐs election of a remnant we would all be completely destroyed. Thank God for election! This is one of the most blessed themes of Holy Scripture. Election is an act of eternal sovereignty (Ephesians 1:3-6), an act of unconditional grace (Romans 9:11-13), and an act of immutable love (Jeremiah 31:3; Malachi 3:6). Election is grace freely and fully bestowed upon chosen sinners in Christ before the world began!

Six Things

There are many other places in the Bible which speak of this remnant, revealing GodŐs purpose of grace toward his elect; but let me remind you of six things Isaiah tells us about this chosen remnant. He tells us thatÉ

1.    Though ruined and scattered by the fall, the remnant shall return to the Lord (Isaiah 10:20-22). That is exactly what Micah said. — ŇThe remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peopleÓ (5:7). — ŇThe remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many peopleÓ (v. 8). — But, this scattered remnant shall return to the Lord (5:3).

2.    The remnant shall return, because Christ shall recover that which was lost (Isaiah 11:10-11).

3.    Christ is the Way by which Ňthe remnant of his peopleÓ returns to him (Isaiah 11:16).

4.    GodŐs elect remnant ought to be the object of our fervent prayer (Isaiah 37:4). We labor for, seek, and pray for the salvation of GodŐs elect.

5.    This remnant, GodŐs elect, shall escape the judgment of God (Isaiah 37:31-32). By his almighty grace this remnant, GodŐs elect, shall take root downward in the earth and bear fruit upward to heaven.

6.     God will preserve and keep his remnant in the midst of all their troubles (Isaiah 46:3-4).

ŇAnd so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from JacobÓ (Romans 11:26).

The Remnant and GodŐs Long-suffering

Isaiah 19

GodŐs longsuffering, goodness, and mercy toward fallen men is the result of his love for this remnant according to the election of grace. The only thing that keeps God from destroying this world in his wrath is the fact that he has an elect remnant among the fallen sons of Adam whom he is determined to save. Is that not what we read in Isaiah 1:9?

ŇExcept the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, [and] we should have been like unto Gomorrah.Ó

God is longsuffering with men, because he is not willing for even one of his elect to perish (2 Peter 3:9; Genesis 19:22; Matthew 24:22; Revelation 7:2-3).

GodŐs longsuffering with man is no indication that he is not willing to punish sin, or that he is not able to punish sin, or that man does not deserve to be punished. GodŐs longsuffering with men is for the salvation of his elect. As the Holy Ghost tells us in 2 Peter 3:15, Ňthe longsuffering of our Lord is salvation.Ó

GodŐs goodness to men in general is the result of his goodness to his elect remnant, Ňthe remnant of Jacob,Ó in particular. As God blessed Egypt for JosephŐs sake, and blessed the house of Obededom because the ark was there, he providentially blesses the men and women of this world for the sake of his elect remnant. If God gives power to Cyrus and riches to a pagan nation he does it for the sake of his elect remnant, whom he is determined to save (Isaiah 45:1-4).

In a word, God is merciful to men in general because he is merciful to his elect in particular. God spared Adam in the garden that he might save Abel .He spared Adam because in AdamŐs loins there was the womanŐs Seed and his seed, Ňthe remnant of Jacob.Ó God gave Manasseh life so that he might raise up Josiah. And God spares many here for a time, and even blesses them with temporal good, that he might be merciful to his elect.

Were it not for Ňthe remnant of JacobÓ God would have destroyed the world in his wrath long ago, as he did Sodom and Gomorrah. GodŐs elect are truly the salt of the earth, the preservers of the whole world. As God spared Sodom for LotŐs sake, God spares the world today for his electŐs sake, that they all might be saved.

Barabbas

Matthew 27:26

Barabbas is a type and picture of sinners for whom Christ Jesus died (1 Timothy1:15). We stand guilty before the law of God (Romans 3:19-20). We were justly convicted of great offences against God (Psalm 51:4). We were waiting the execution by God's holy law (Romans6:23). However, by the order of Almighty God, Jesus Christ was sent to rescue, redeem and release sinners

(Luke 4:18).                                                                                                                  — Pastor Tom Harding
