Saved unto the Utmost NowDon Fortner

(Tune: Depth of Mercy # 233)

1.    Saving grace and love divine!

Who its heights and depths can tell?

By GodÕs infinite designs,

Christ has ransomed us from hell.

2.    MystÕry of redemption this:

Christ for sinners sin was made!

Making our transgressions His,

He complete atonement made!

3.    By His blood weÕre justified,

Freed from sin, and more than this: —

Guiltless, since for us He died,

By His grace made righteousness!

4.    Saved unto the utmost now,

Sing, oh, sing with heartfelt praise!

RevÕrently, Savior, we bow,

To extol Your love and grace!

ÒThe eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting armsÓ (Deuteronomy 33:27). — What a sweet word of assurance that is to our poor souls in the face of trials, heartaches, and oppression! Throughout the Word of God we are assured, again and again, that the Triune Jehovah, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, is our Refuge. The Lord Jesus Christ is our Hiding Place and Covert from the tempest and the storm (Isaiah 32:2). Blessed are those people who can lift their hearts to heaven and say of the eternal God, as David did, — ÒThou art my hiding place; Thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.Ó (Psalms 32:7). — ÒThe name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safeÓ (Proverbs 18:10).

ÒI will love them freely.Ó

Hosea 14:4

In grace everything is free! All that God does for and with man in grace is free; and all that man does for and with God is free. You cannot talk about grace and law in the same breath. The two are mutually exclusive. GodÕs grace toward us is free. And the grace of God in us causes us to serve him freely. Wherever you find grace, in God or in man, you will find it acting freely, without cause, without condition, without qualification, without constraint, without coercion!

In every place, since the fall of Adam, where the word ÒfreelyÓ is used in the Word of God it has a direct connection with grace, either the grace of God operating toward us, or the grace of God operating in us.

Free Love

Hear GodÕs promise to all who return to him, to all who trust his dear Son. — ÒI will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from himIn free love he chose us (Deuteronomy 7:7-9). In free love he redeemed us (Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:10). In free love he called us (Jeremiah 31:3; 1 John 3:1).

Free Justification

All who are saved by the grace of God are Òjustified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ JesusÓ (Romans 3:24). Justification is being made righteous by God. It involves blood redemption, forgiveness of all sin, and perfect righteousness, the very righteousness of God. The righteousness of God belongs to GodÕs elect from eternity by virtue of our eternal union with the Lord Jesus Christ. It is imparted to us in regeneration, when we are made Òpartakers of the divine nature.Ó And it is imputed to us consciously by faith in Christ.

This justification is completely free. We are justified freely by GodÕs matchless grace! We are justified freely by the grace of God through the redemptive accomplishments of Christ. It is free to us, but, oh, what it cost our Savior! Justification is free to us; but it cost our Savior his lifeÕs blood!

Free Salvation

ÒI will give to him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.Ó — Christ gives salvation freely! And he invites you to take the salvation he gives freely (Revelations 21:6; 22:17). It is a gift, but a gift that must be taken. If you would have GodÕs salvation you must receive it from Christ (John 1:12-13). — ÒLet us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of needÓ (Hebrews 4:16).

Come freely to the Throne of Grace, where mercy free abounds,

Mercy designed to meet your case. — So pray and spread your wounds.

Come, heavy heart, pour out your groans, your every burden bring

To Him Who loves to hear your groans. — Here love eternal springs!

This Spring of Living Water flows to thirsting, needy hearts.

In every time of need God knows what comforts to impart.

ÒThou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.Ó

Psalm 138:2

What an utterly astounding statement! GodÕs name represents all his attributes and all his works. His name represents the totality of his infinite Being. Yet, the psalmist declares that he has magnified his Word above all his name.

Men may poke fun and make light of it until God casts them into hell, but this blessed Book is GodÕs Holy Word. It may not be important to you, but you better believe it is important to God! — ÒForever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heavenÓ (Psalm 119:89). — ÒThe word of our God shall stand foreverÓ (Isaiah 40:8). — ÒLet God be true, and every man a liar!Ó God says, ÒMy word shall not return to me voidÓ (Isaiah 55:11).

All GodÕs works are by his Word: His Living Word, His Decreed Word, His Oral Word, His Written Word, or His Preached Word. The world was created by the Word of God. Heaven and earth are preserved and held in tact by the word of God. Christ is revealed by the Word of God. Men and women are convinced of sin by the Word of God. Faith is given by the Word of God. Comfort is administered by the Word of God. Saints are motivated, edified, protected, and ruled by the Word of God.

No wonder then that John wrote, ÒBlessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written thereinÓ (Revelation 1:3).

1.    The Word of God is the seed of spiritual life by which chosen, redeemed sinners are born again (Hebrews 4:12; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23-25).

2.    The solitary basis of our faith is the Word of God (Romans 4:3, 20-22). — The Book of God is our only rule of faith and practice, our only creed, our only confession of faith.

3.    The Word of God is the foundation of our hope (Psalm 119:49, 81, 114).

4.    The Word of God will be the basis of judgment at the bar of God in the last day (John 12:47-50). In that great and terrible day God almighty will judge all men by the light of this blessed Book.

5.    The Word of our God shall stand forever (Matthew 5:18; Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 46:9-11). — ÒThe Word of our God shall stand foreverÓ (Isaiah 40:8).

God almighty will do all his Word. God is as good as his Word. It will all be fulfilled. His word of predestination shall be accomplished. His word of grace shall be performed. His word of promise shall be fulfilled. And his word of judgment shall be executed.

The Lord God says, ÒTo this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my wordÓ (Isaiah 66:2). This Book and this Book alone is able to make you wise unto salvation.
