Substitution is the message of the Bible and the very heart of the gospel. And this is the way God the Holy Ghost declares this sweet, gospel doctrine. — ÒFor he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him

Sing unto Christ, Who Loved and Bled Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear —CM)

1.    Sing unto Christ, Who loved and bled,

Let chosen sinners sing!

Christ Jesus suffered in your stead,

Your Savior, God, and King.

2.    He washed His chosen in His blood,

From every guilty stain!

He made us kings and priests to God,

Who put away our sin.

3.    Sing of His everlasting love,

The fountain of all grace!

Sing to Him here, then sing above,

Of free and sovÕreign grace.

4.    To Him that loved us, though depraved,

Though guilty, blind, and poor,

To Him that loved, and died, and saved,

Be glory evermore!

ÒChrist made sin for us. What! Was the perfectly pure, innocent, holy, and immaculate Lamb of God made sin? O mystery of mysteries! ÒThis is the LordÕs doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.Ó This is the wonder of angels, the joy of sinners, the glory of saints upon earth, and the triumph of the spirits of just men made perfect in glory. But who durst ever conceive the thought? Who would be bold to utter the expression Christ made sin, made sin for us; was it not the revealed truth of God, and bore witness to by the Spirit of inspiration?Ó

— William Mason

Substitution

ÒFor he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Ó 2 Corinthians 5:21)

What a profound truth! What stupendous grace, what wondrous mystery these words contain I cannot tell you. ÒHe,Ó God the Father, Òhath,Ó in holy justice and infinite mercy, Òmade,Ó by a single act at one time ordained and wondrously, mysteriously caused Òhim,Ó the Lord Jesus Christ, his infinite, well-beloved, only begotten, immaculate Son, Òsin,Ó an awful mass of iniquity, Òfor us,Ó helpless, condemned, sinful rebels!

GodÕs Greatest Work

Here God the Holy Ghost sets before us the vital truth of the gospel. This is the foundation truth of Christianity, the rock upon which our hopes are built. This is the only hope of the sinner, and the joy of every true believer.

Substitution is the great transaction that took place at Calvary a little more than two thousand years ago. The great substitutionary work of Christ, the mighty transfer of sin from the sinner to the sinnerÕs Surety, the punishment of the Surety in the sinnerÕs place, the pouring out of the vials of divine wrath, which were due to us, upon the head of our dear Savior, the Son of God, is the greatest transaction that ever took place upon the earth, the most marvelous sight that men ever saw, and the most stupendous wonder that heaven ever executed.

Jesus Christ, the Holy One of God, was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him! Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb of God, was made sin! By him being made sin, we (sinners chosen in eternal love, the sinners for whom his blood was shed, sinners who trust the Christ of God) are made the righteousness of God in him.

The Lord Jesus Christ was made sin for us. No man living upon this earth will ever really understand this truth. Yet, I hope that our hearts may be gripped by the reality of it. Oh, may God cause it to get hold of our hearts!

The BibleÕs Message

This grand old gospel doctrine of substitution is the great truth of Holy Scripture. Why did all the types and ceremonies of the law portray it? Why did all the commandments of God point to it? Why were all the prophets inspired of God to declare it? Why is it declared throughout the New Testament? Why do BelieversÕ Baptism and the LordÕs Supper, the ordinances of divine worship instituted by God our Savior remind us of it? Why are all matters of obedience to God, service to one another, and faithfulness to our Savior motivated and guided by this?

GodÕs Reason

The reason is obvious. — It is GodÕs intention for every saved sinner to glory only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The substitutionary sacrifice of Christ is to be the constant object of our faith, the daily glory of our hearts, and the continual triumph of our souls. Let every saved sinner constantly hold fast this blessed revelation of grace against all that sin, the law, or Satan can urge against us and lay to our charge. Until we cast our crowns before him in glory, who was once made sin for us, let us cherish, glory in, and give thanks to our great God, the Triune Jehovah, for the gospel doctrine of substitution revealed in this wondrous declaration of grace — ÒFor he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Ó Every word in that divine declaration is replete with consolation for our souls!

ÒWe will be emptied of self before we will be filled with grace; we will be stripped of our rags before we will be clothed in His righteousness; unclothed that we maybe clothed; wounded that we may be healed; killed that we may live; buried in shame that we may rise in holy glory. These words, Òsown in corruption, that we may be raised in incorruption; sown in dishonor, that we may be raised in glory; sown in weakness, that we may be raised in power,Ó are as true of the soul as of the body! To borrow an illustration from the surgeonÕs art: the bone that is set wrong must be broken again in order that it may be set aright.Ó                                                                                                                                      — Thomas Gutherie

Unconditional Pardon

John Bunyan

There was a certain man that had committed treason against his king; but for as much as the king had compassion on him, he sent him, by the hand of a faithful messenger, a pardon under his own hand and seal. But in the country where this poor man dwelt there were also many that sought to trouble him by often putting him in mind of his treason and the law that was to be executed on the offender.

Now, which way should this man so honor his king, as by believing his handwriting, which was the pardon? Certainly he would honor him more by so doing, than to regard all the clamors of his enemies continually against him.

Just thus it is here. Thou having committed treason against the King of heaven, he, through compassion for ChristÕs sake, hath sent thee a pardon. But the devil, the law, and thy conscience, do continually seek to disturb thee, by bringing thy sin afresh into thy remembrance. But how wouldst thou honor thy King? Why, he that believeth the record that God hath given of his Son Òhath set to his seal that God is true. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his SonÓ (1 John 5: 11, 12).

And therefore, my brethren, seeing God our Father hath sent to us, damnable traitors, a pardon from heaven (even all the promises of the gospel), and also hath sealed the certainty of it with the heart-blood of his dear Son, let us not be daunted, though our enemies with terrible voices do bring our former life never so often into our remembrance.Ó
