Grace Baptist Church of Danville

June 28, 2015

As the first Adam made himself sin and plunged himself into death under the curse of God because of his love for the wife God gave him, so the last Adam, our Lord Jesus Christ, willingly made himself sin and plunged himself into death under the curse of God because of his love for his elect, the Church, the wife God gave to him.

My Savior and My God Don Fortner

(Tune: #52 — Majestic Sweetness —CM)

  1. Behold, in Jesus, clear and bright, the Father’s glories shine!

My faith beholds Him with delight, and sings, “This God is mine!”

  1. Divine perfections are His own; and He’s adored above,

Sitting by right upon His throne, — The mighty God of love!

  1. He built the world. He conquered hell. He ransomed me with blood!

He rules and governs all things well, — My Savior and my God!

  1. All that God is, the God-man is: — Jehovah, God the Son!

I trust His blood and righteousness, and bow before His throne!

“Being Now Justified”

Substitution, Sure Salvation, and Joy in God

Romans 5:6-11

Being now justified by his blood,” God’s saints, stand in grace, rejoicing “in hope of the glory of God,” because we have the sweet assurance of effectual, substitutionary redemption, securing us of everlasting salvation, giving us joy in God our Savior.

Substitution

In Romans 5:6-8 the Apostle returns to his favorite subject, substitution, the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ. No reason can be found why so great and glorious a sacrifice should be made for sinners like us, but the sovereign love of our eternal Jehovah to his people, who were all without strength and ungodly when Christ died for them.

Our Savior’s death upon the cursed tree, we are told, was in due time, the very time fixed upon in covenant engagements to honor his bond of responsibility as the Surety for his elect by his death.

How cheering this doctrine is to those who know and feel the burden of sin, to learn that we are the very people for whom Christ died – the ungodly, – and that his death for us is sufficient warrant for our complete confidence and our highest expectations. No matter how dark and deep the stain of sin, no matter how overwhelming the consciousness of sin is, here is the antidote – “Christ died for the ungodly!

This one, all-sufficient sacrifice is the commendation of the love of God to poor, needy, guilty sinners. What higher testimony could Jehovah give of his love to our souls, than the gift of his only-begotten and co-equal Son to die for sinners? But our poor depraved hearts are so unconscious of the value of that love of God, that he commends it to us in all its fulness, freeness, sovereignty, and immutability, as displayed in the death of Christ.

Nevertheless, with such commendation, and with all that the preachers of the everlasting Gospel can say to commend it, not one of Adam’s ruined race ever did, or ever will believe it and receive it until God the Holy Ghost puts forth divine power to convince man of his need of the atonement, and enables him to receive it. But when he condescends to impart life divine to the soul, making us willing in the day of his power, every refuge of lies is forsaken, and the one offering of Christ, once for all, becomes the exclusive dependence, and the daily rejoicing of that man.

Salvation Sure

Being now justified by his blood,” every believing sinner is assured of that glory in which we hope, every believing sinner is assured of everlasting salvation in and with Christ (Romans 5:9-10). All who are justified by the atonement of Christ and his perfect righteousness shall be saved forever; for it is impossible that the end for which Christ died can be frustrated. — He who died to make reconciliation, lives to claim salvation for all for whom he died.

Joy in God

Being now justified by his blood,” we who were once terrified by God now joy in God through the atonement we have received by faith in Christ. — “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement” (Romans 5:11).

The knowledge and assurance of standing complete in Christ produce joy in God, joy in the hearts of all who have received the atonement by faith. In that atonement all the perfections of Deity are seen smiling upon the sinner, having received full satisfaction for his sin. In Christ, by faith in Christ, the pardoned and justified soul joys in the justice of God as much as in his mercy and love. The beginning of this joy is in holy fellowship with all the persons in the Godhead here and now, while we live in this world. It will be consummated and perpetuated to all eternity in the world above.

“Terrible as An Army with Banners”

(Song of Solomon 6:4)

Pastor Eric Richards

Try to imagine standing in a field of battle long ago when men fought gruesomely with sword and shield. There on a hill appears a great army arrayed in formation. They march in unison, shaking the ground with the noise of a multitude, a vast battalion which no man can number. This great army is undefeated, crushing all opposition that would dare oppose her King. All things work together for her ultimate victory and good. The earth helps her successful campaign. Even her enemies are constrained by the Almighty to assist her by their constant attack. Every wound is healed by grace, and divine lessons are learned through each battle.

The militant Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is marching triumphantly through this valley of time. The Banner over her is Christ. He is Jehovah-nissi, the Lord our Banner. —“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love” (Song of Solomon 2:4). He is our Captain, our Man of war, our Defender and Shield. No weapon formed against us shall prosper. All our enemies fall before us. — “If God be for us, who can be against us?

He says to us, “Thou art terrible as an army with banners… These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (Song of Solomon 6:4, John 16:33). Stand in the Lord and rejoice in him! He strikes terror in the hearts of our enemy. Put on Christ and rest, O my soul! — “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11).

During our walk through this world in a corrupt body of flesh, we are always militant in battle against the wily schemes of Satan. He would have us look away from Christ to ourselves. He would sift us and cause our faith to fail if he could. But our Savior prays for us that our faith fail not. And he’s given us instruction as the Captain and Commander of our salvation. We are to take the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit, watching thereunto with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Take the shield of faith, which is the faith of Christ, whereby we deflect the fiery arrows of the wicked one (Ephesians 6).

That slimy dragon of Hell dips his arrows in Sinai’s fiery mount before flinging them at our hearts. He would put us under the works of the law for justification with God. He would take away our restful peace in Christ. Deflect and repel such darts with the shield of faith. — “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:16).”

God make us disciplined soldiers of Jesus Christ, fighting the good fight of faith, trusting in him alone for all our salvation. He who cannot lie said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47). Stand in Christ and rejoice with thanksgiving! Show forth his praise for it’s befitting and good. It’s also terribly dreadful to our enemy! His time is short and he knows it. The devil quakes with sound of Jehovah’s army! Shout the glory of our Savior. — “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4).
