Grace Baptist Church of Danville

January 19, 2014

Universal love, universal grace, and universal redemption is meaningless love, meaningless grace, and meaningless redemption. To preach such is to preach a meaningless gospel, a meaningless god, and a meaningless savior.

The Trump Shall Sound  Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear —CM)

1.    On that tremendous, solemn day,

When death gives up her host,

The dead in Christ shall lead the way,

And in their Savior boast.

2.    The grave will have no strength to hold

The sacred sleeping dust;

The trump shall sound, the tombs unfold,

And all the saints rise first!

3.    Rise, as the monuments of grace,

And placed in heaven above,

We shall see Jesus face to face,

And live upon His love.

4.    In Christ we live; in Christ we’ll die,

And with this blood-bought throng,

We’ll rise to meet Him in the sky,

And join the happy song.

5.    Worthy is the Lamb, blessed Lamb

The Lamb upon the throne,

The conq’ring Lion of Judah’s tribe,

Who has prevailed and won!

Another Jubilee Trumpet

Leviticus 25:1-55

The gospel is God’s jubilee trumpet. Blessed are they who hear the glad sound (Isaiah 27:13; Psalm 89:15). But there is another jubilee trumpet we will soon hear. Let us live upon the tiptoe of hope and expectation, listening for its sound (1 Corinthians 15:51-52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 11:15-19). Once that trumpet blows announcing the glorious coming of our Savior, and our eternal jubilee has commenced, we shall forever enjoy atonement to its fullest, liberty beyond imagination, forgiveness in its greatest magnificence, rest in perfection, bounty beyond measure, restoration such as eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and the heart of man has never conceived, and brotherly love in unfailing perfection!

Kinsman Redeemer

Have you heard the joyful sound? Has the Son of God made you free? Has the Lord Jesus caused you to return to your long-lost, long ago forfeited inheritance? Let us never forget the unspeakable mercy. Hail, Almighty Deliverer, blessed Redeemer of your captives! I had sold my possession, sold myself for nothing; and you have redeemed it for me again without money. I had sold it, but could not destroy it, because the right of redemption was with my Kinsman Redeemer.

Yes, blessed Son of God, your brethren shall praise you. You are the next of kin, the nearest of all relations, and the dearest of all brothers. And you have redeemed both body and soul, both lands and inheritance, by your blood. You, O blessed Christ, have so completely redeemed all that it can never be lost again, and never forfeited!

Let the jubilee trumpet sound and be heard through all the land in this gospel day! Give liberty to the captive and sight to the blind. Bring forth the prisoners out of the prison, and them that sit in darkness into your great light.

Oh, cause us to know the joyful sound, and daily to walk in the light of your countenance. Cause us, by the sweet influences of your Holy Spirit, to live in the constant expectation of the year of the everlasting jubilee, when the trumpet of the archangel shall finally sound, and all the redeemed shall return to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. Oh, blessed, blessed hope! Then we shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Hallelujah!

Distinguishing Grace

Do not overlook the display given of God’s special, distinguishing grace given in the jubilee law. In Leviticus 25:44-46 the Lord God specifically distinguishes Israel’s bondmen from all other bondmen. The jubilee portrayed special grace, God’s saving grace in Christ; therefore we read here that only those bondmen who were God’s covenant people would be set to go free in the year of jubilee, all of those bondmen, but only those bondmen. So it is in the fulfilment of the type. Christ Jesus, by almighty, effectual, irresistible grace, sends forth and delivers his prisoners (Zechariah 9:11).

Jesus Christ’s Disciples Known and Distinguished

(John 13:34-35)

Missionary Daniel Parks

The Biblical definition of disciple is “one who follows one’s teaching”.

In Jesus Christ’s day there were certain disciples who were known for teaching that they had freewill1, for claiming to be more righteous and more holy than others2, for justifying themselves through their works of righteousness3, for faithfully following the traditions of their elders4, for observing the weekly Sabbath Day5, and for obeying other regulations found in the Law of Moses (e.g., abstaining from things considered “unclean”).

Whose disciples do you suppose they were?

If you think they were disciples of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, you are wrong! They were disciples of the Pharisees (as they are identified in Luke 5:33). And they were Jesus Christ’s foremost enemies (Matthew 22:15f).

Yes! Jesus Christ’s most ardent opponents were – and still are today – known for and distinguished by their outward religion.

For what were Jesus Christ’s disciples known?

Negatively, Jesus Christ’s disciples were not known for the things for which Pharisees’ disciples were known. Jesus’ disciples were not known for boasting of their freewill, for they acknowledged their native spiritual bondage in Satan’s snare6, and Jesus as their liberator therefrom7. Jesus’ disciples were not known for claiming to be more righteous and holy than others, for they acknowledged themselves as the chief of sinners8. Jesus’ disciples were not known for justifying themselves through their works, for they acknowledged that they were justified by God’s grace through faith in Christ9. Jesus’ disciples were not known for following the traditions of manmade religion, for they followed Christ10. Jesus’ disciples were not known for observing the weekly Sabbath Day, for He was their Sabbath11, and they were at liberty to esteem every day alike12. Jesus’ disciples were not known for observing other regulations found in the Law of Moses (e.g., abstaining from things considered “unclean”), for they were not under that law13, and they knew that things considered “unclean” under that law are no longer “unclean” through Christ14.

Positively, Jesus Christ’s disciples are known for loving one another as He loved them. He tells them so in John 13:34-35: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

And in this world of hatred, this is a most distinguishing characteristic.

Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?
