Grace Baptist Church of Danville

September 22, 2013

Faithful Gospel preachers are men who hazard their lives for the cause of Christ (Acts 15:26), men who willingly forsake all to serve the Savior, refusing to be entangled with the affairs of this life (2 Timothy 2:4).

My Sin, My Savior, I ConfessDon Fortner

(Tune: #66 — Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts — LM)

1.    When Satan raises Moses up

And would my rest in Christ disrupt,

While I confess the sin I hate,

I look to Christ my Advocate.

2.    No sinner’s heart is worse than mine;

But Christ my Advocate Divine

Appears before the throne of God,

And pleads the merit of His blood.

3.    The plea that justice can’t refuse —

The only plea that He will use!

And all the praise to Him I’ll give;

For while He pleads my soul shall live!

4.    When Satan roars, I look away

To Christ my Advocate and say,

“My sin, my Savior, I confess,

And trust the riches of Your grace.”

 “How can a man be just with God?”

Job 25:4

How can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean [that is] born of a woman?”  — Find the answer to those two questions and you will understand the message of Holy Scripture. How can a holy, righteous, just, and true God forgive a guilty sinner, justify an ungodly man, make an unrighteous person righteous, and an unholy one holy? How can the Triune Jehovah be both “a just God and a Savior”?

The Lord God says of Himself in Exodus 34:6-7 that He is — “The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,  Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear [the guilty]; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth [generation]”.

Here are four facts revealed in the Word of God, facts that are stated with utter clarity, facts that cannot be gainsaid. Many try to deny them; but these four facts cannot be denied.

1.    If you and I enter into heaven, we must be perfect, perfectly righteous, completely free from sin, perfectly holy. — We must “be perfect to be accepted” (Leviticus 22:21). — “The unclean shall not pass over” Zion’s Highway (Isaiah 35:8-10). — It is written, “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:27).

2.    The God of Glory cannot and will not simply pretend that a sinner is righteous and save him. — “He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both [are] abomination to the LORD” (Proverbs 17:15). — “Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.” (Exodus 23:7)

3.    God almighty cannot condemn a just man, slay a righteous man, or punish an innocent man. — Holiness will not allow it. Justice will not permit it. — “He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both [are] abomination to the LORD” (Proverbs 17:15). — He will not “condemn the innocent blood” (Psalm 94:21). — The holy, just God will not “slay the righteous with the wicked” (Genesis 18:23-25). Abraham used that as his plea with God for Lot’s deliverance from Sodom.

4.    The only possible way for God to save sinners is if God Himself, “the God of all grace,” finds a way in mercy and truth to make the sinner perfectly righteous and holy. — “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from evil” (Proverbs 16:6).

Blessed be His holy name forever, God did find a way of mercy and truth to save our poor souls; and that way is the substitutionary, sin-atoning sacrifice of His own dear Son in our place at Calvary! — “Then He is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom” (Job 33:24). The Gospel of God is the revelation of God’s righteousness in the salvation of sinners (Romans 3:21-31). It is the revelation of the very glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, the sinner’s Substitute (2 Corinthians 4:6).

œ———————————————————

“Christ hath redeemed us.”

Galatians 3:13

Jesus Christ “put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26). Hebrews 1:3 tells us that God’s darling Son “by Himself purged our sins. Somebody’s sins were “put away, purged.” There are millions of sinners suffering in eternal torment right now who died in their sins. Many will die in their sins and wake up in hell today. And that will be the case for many sinners every day until our Lord Jesus returns. Their sins were not put away,” were not purged. But somebody’s iniquities were laid on the Lord Jesus; and He put all of them away forever by the supreme sacrifice of Himself.

Whose sins have been removed so far from God’s sight that He remembers them no more”? A particular people who are called God’s elect. Romans 8:33 asks this question: Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? God’s elect are chargeable. We are just as guilty as those whose sins have not been “put away.” But God the Father has made His Son, who knew no sin, to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Therefore, nothing can be successfully laid to our charge.

Our blessed Redeemer paid the ransom price in full for all of His chosen people. The precious redeeming blood of Jesus Christ has removed every spot and stain from those He laid down His life for, and has washed us perfectly clean in the sight of God our Father forever! And our risen, exalted Savior has appeared in the presence of God for us as the blessed Surety of all His covenant people. Our risen, exalted Lord, by His life-giving power, not only gives eternal life to “as many as were given to Him in the eternal covenant of grace (John 17:2), we are also kept by His life-sustaining power through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:5).

Because the sins of His people have been “put away,” our Great Majestic God and Savior will present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. To Jesus Christ, “the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen (Jude 24-25).
