Grace Baptist Church of Danville

April 14, 2013

Preaching is not talking to give out the light, frivolous imaginations of our minds. Preaching is proclaiming God’s truth with sound judgment, truth fixed in our hearts by God the Holy Spirit, by diligent labor in study and earnest prayer, to the profit of God’s people. If we would preach, we must labor in the Word and in the doctrine.

The Wonders of Your Word I Sing — Don Fortner

(Tune: #52 — Majestic Sweetness — CM)

1.    Jesus, my God, my Friend, my King,

Whom heav’n and earth adore,

The wonders of Your word I sing,

And hope to yet know more.

2.    Your word in cov’nant undertook

To bring salvation in:

Your word upon mount Calv’ry shook

The gates of hell and sin.

3.    Your pow’rful word can intercede,

And grace Divine impart;

Can change the soul, supply its need,

And sanctify the heart.

4.    Your sov’reign word knows no control:

Its conquests none can tell:

Its triumphs reach from pole to pole,

To heaven and earth, and hell.

5.    Summoned by You, all worlds shall come,

And stand before Your throne:

Your word Your saints shall welcome home,

And bid Your foes depart.

Wresting the Scriptures

“As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” (2 Peter 3:16)

Those who wrest the Scriptures to their own destruction and pervert the doctrines of the gospel to deceive the souls of men do so by quoting isolated verses, sentences, and phrases as proof texts. Ignoring the context in which the quotation is found, they align it with other similar quotations to prove their preconceived doctrines, or to disprove that which is clearly taught in the Word of God which they do not like.

Dishonest

Such a method of interpreting the Scriptures is both dishonest and irreverent, revealing a total disregard for the authority of God’s Word. Interpreting Scripture this way, anyone can make the Bible say whatever they want it to say. We must never be guilty of thus “handling the Word of God deceitfully” (2 Corinthians 4:2).

A Rule

Here is a rule of biblical interpretation that must never be ignored: — If you want to know what the Word of God teaches about a subject, always go to that place where that subject is taught and explained in the Scriptures, and build your doctrine upon the plain statements of Holy Scripture.

For example: If we want to know what the Bible teaches about divorce and remarriage, we must build our doctrine concerning it form 1 Corinthians 7, and interpret all other passages in the light of Paul’s clear words of instruction in that chapter. The same is true with regard to all other points of doctrine. Without question, all true doctrine is taught throughout the Word and is illustrated in many ways. But every true doctrine is definitely stated and explained in specific passages.

·      The Trinity (1 John 5:7)

·      Election and Predestination (Romans 8-11; Ephesians 1:3-14)

·      Effectual Redemption (Isaiah 53; 2 Corinthians 5)

·      Free Justification (Romans 3-5; Galatians 1-5)

·      Regeneration (John 3)

·      Baptism (Romans 6)

·      The Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11)

·      The Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15; 1 Thessalonians 4).

This is not an over simplification of hermeneutics, but an absolute necessity for honest biblical interpretation. If we would know the will of God, understand the Word of God, and in all things glorify God, we must always interpret Scripture by Scripture in its contextual setting.

Perfect Vision

And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.” (Matthew 17:8)

“Jesus Only”

Peter, James, and John heard the voice of God on the Mount of Transfiguration and fell on their face, and were sore afraid. Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, be not afraid.” What a blessed picture of that one Mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus! They had seen Moses there, the lawgiver; but he could never be a mediator, for “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight. They also saw Elijah. Like all the prophets, he spoke of Christ; but neither could he be a mediator. Only the Lord Jesus has that authority. God says to every trembling, guilty sinner, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. These same disciples would after this declare, Him hath God exalted with his right hand a Prince and a Saviour.

“Jesus Only with Themselves”

Jesus only with themselves — These words are from Mark’s account (Mark 9:8). Though Jesus trod the winepress alone and of the people there was none with Him, none to help, none to uphold, yet He was representing all those He came to save. This Great Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep. He acted by Himself, but not for Himself alone. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.Yes, blessed be His name, He obtained eternal redemption for us. He gave His life a ransom for many. “And I looked, and lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him...With Him forever!

One when He died, One when He rose;

One when He triumphed o’er His foes.

One when in heaven, He took His seat,

And heaven sang all hell’s defeat.’

“Jesus was Found Alone”

The One God the Father spoke of and commanded them to hear was not Moses or Elijah, but His Son. Christ is the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, one with God, and Himself God. Luke alone tells us what the Lord talked about with Moses and Elijah. They spoke of His decease, His exodus, He should accomplish at Jerusalem. That is the subject of all the Scriptures, Old and New Testaments. That is the glorious subject angels adore and wonder at. That is the only subject the apostle Paul was determined to know. And that will be the subject of the song of the multitudes of redeemed sinners throughout eternity! Jesus alone will be the One that the whole population of heaven rejoices to proclaim. — Worthy is the Lam!I try to sing to His glory now, but it’s mixed with too much of self, but soon:

“When with the ransomed in glory His face I at last shall see,

‘Twill be my joy thru the ages To sing of His love to me.”
