Sin could not die, unless Christ died; Christ could not die without being made sin; nor could he die, but sin must die with him.”

By Him We CrucifiedDon Fortner

(Tune: #110 — Alas! And did My Savior Bleed — CM)

1.    Chosen by grace, in Jesus found,

And freely justified,

We shall with endless life be crowned,

By Him we crucified!

2.    The law on us has no demand,

Yet, we its precepts love;

For justified, by grace we stand,

And -wait for joys above.

3.    No condemnation is proclaimed,

Against God’s chosen race ;

And we shall not be put to shame

Before Jehovah’s face!

4.    By God the Holy Spirit taught,

We live and walk by faith;

And home to Glory we’ll be brought,

By God’s unfailing grace!

5.    Nothing in heaven, earth, or hell

Can our blest souls destroy;

With Christ, our Surety, we’ll dwell

In everlasting joy!

“The Remnant of Jacob”

Micah 5:7

In this chapter God’s people are repeatedly described as a remnant (vv. 3, 7, 8): — “The remnant of Jacob!” What is a remnant? A remnant is what is left over. A remnant is that which is useless, despised, and thrown away. A remnant is the last piece of cloth on a bolt, or roll. If it is not thrown away, it is always sold at a discount, because it not worth much. That is a pretty good description of you and me. God’s elect are looked upon as being below the mark, not fit for society, as narrow, crude, crotchety, peculiar. They are a nuisance and aggravation to the world.

It was true in Micah’s time, and it is true today, that the Church and people of the living God are a poor, needy remnant, a remnant scattered among the nations, an elect remnant, a redeemed remnant, a protected remnant. Micah tells us that we are God’s remnant. Particularly and distinctly he tells us that we are God’s remnant in Christ’s hands, under Christ’s care, given to Christ, our Prince, Priest, Provider, and Protector (Micah 5:4).

The God of all grace deals with a remnant. He seeks a remnant. He builds his house with a remnant. His treasure is a remnant. Let me show you five things revealed in the Book of God about his remnant.

1.    There is a remnant according to the election of grace (Romans 11:5). God has not chosen to save all men; but there is a remnant chosen from among the ruins of Adam’s fallen race who must and shall be saved (Ephesians 1:3-6; John 10:16).

2.    Everything God does he does for his remnant. All men benefit from God’s goodness to his remnant. His benevolence, rain, sunshine, peace and pestilence, draught, darkness and war come upon all men alike. But they come for and belong to the remnant (1 Corinthians 3:21; Psalm 57:2).

3.    God is longsuffering with all men for the sake of the remnant (2 Peter 3:9). Were it not for God’s elect remnant, he would have destroyed the world in his wrath long ago, as he did Sodom and Gomorrah. God’s elect are truly the salt, the preservers, of the earth. As God spared Adam for Abel’s sake and Sodom for Lot’s sake, God spares the world today for his elect’s sake, that they all might be saved.

4.    God’s remnant in this world is always small and feeble (Isaiah 16:14). In the end they will be a great multitude. But in this world God’s people are always a very small minority.

5.    God will save his elect remnant (Romans 9:27, 11:26). Not one of that great remnant for whom God made, rules and disposes of this world shall be lost. God the Father loved them. God the Son redeemed them. God the Spirit calls them. And God, by his great grace, will preserve them unto life everlasting.

From One Broken Heart to Another

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Darvin Pruitt

At the funeral of a beloved baby boy I read these two verses of scripture: — “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and to the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort of God.” According to just such an experience of comfort to myself I offered to them these four things…

That this beloved baby is beyond all doubt in the loving arms of his redeemer. The psalmist David fasted and wept for his child until God took him home, then he cleaned himself up, nourished himself with food, and went on with his life in the confident assurance that he himself would be with him again in glory.

That the death of this child was not a senseless tragedy but is according to God’s eternal purpose of grace. Every believer knows that all of his elect are predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will (Romans 8: 28; Ephesians 1: 10-11).

Also, I offered this word of comfort: He is in a better place. This is a phrase often used in funeral messages that has no application to the deceased. But in this case it does. Simply leaving this world is no assurance that we are going to a better place. — “It is appointed with man once to die and after this the judgment.” It will be said to some, “these shall go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into life eternal” (Matthew 25: 46; Hebrews 9: 27). — “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth” (Revelations 14: 13). What a glorious place! It is a place where God, himself, shall wipe away all tears. A place where there is no more sin, no more doubt, no more suffering or grief. It is a place where there is no more fear, no more death and no more deceit. Those who go to this place will never again know loneliness¸ heartache, envy, or hatred. Those who go to this place shall ever be with the Lord.

I offer you this comfort that those who truly belong to the Lord will never die. They may shed this tabernacle of clay for a season but their soul is as much alive and more than it ever was.

From one broken heart to another; I offer you the comfort which God, himself, has comforted me. Believe it, hope in it, rejoice in it and give praise unto him who giveth us the victory.
