Imparted Righteousness

The children of God are righteous by the implantation in their bosom of a righteous nature, which, as being born of God, is as pure as God is pure and as holy as he is holy. For this reason we are said to be “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4), and to “put on the new man which after God [that is, after the image of God] is created” — it being a divine and new creation, “in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:24.) This pure and holy nature, John tells us, cannot sin, because it is born of God (1 John 3:9), and is “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” which makes the soul free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2), being that kingdom of God in the heart, which is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17.) This is an imparted righteousness, and its very essence is that sweet spirituality of mind, which is life and peace, and that holiness without which no man shall see the Lord (Romans 8:6; Hebrews 12:14).

Pastors and Churches

In recent months the Lord has been pleased to raise up pastors to meet the needs of his church. Let us do everything possible to assist our brethren and the churches they serve, laboring together with us for the furtherance of the gospel and the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Bro. Clay Curtis                                                      Bro. Fred Evans

Sovereign Grace Baptist Church  Redeemer Baptist Church

Princeton, New Jersey                                           Louisville, Kentucky

Bro. Darvin Pruitt                                       Bro. David Eddmenson

Grace Baptist Church                                             Laird Street Baptist Church

Taylor, Arkansas                                                      New Caney, Texas

After serving Redeemer Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky as pastor for fourteen years, Bro. Daniel Parks and his wife are moving to Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands. Bro. Parks will be working with a local church there to establish a school for the training of Caribbean preachers.

The Lord God has promised his church, “I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15). As he does, as he sends forth laborers into his vineyard, let us lift their names before the throne of grace and seek the Lord’s blessing upon his people and let them know that our hearts are for them and with them.

Salvation is of the Lord! — Jonah 2:9

Salvation” is a big word. It includes much more than a believer’s initial experience of grace in regeneration and conversion. Salvation includes everything required to bring fallen sinners from the pit of the damned into the eternal presence of God’s glory in heaven. And, from first to last, it is the work of God’s free grace alone. Man does nothing. Man contributes nothing. Nothing is determined by or dependent upon the will of man, the works of man, or the worth of man. “Salvation is of the Lord!

This is the essence of all true doctrine. Today, sinners are called upon to walk an aisle, say a prayer, or otherwise do something to obtain salvation. The prophet of God declares, “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13). — “Salvation is of the Lord” in its planning (Ephesians 1:3-6; 2 Timothy 1:9; Romans 8:28-30), in its purchase (Romans 3:24-26; Galatians 3:l3; Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 1:18-20), in its execution (John 3:8; Ephesians 2:1-9), in its preservation (John 10:27-30; Jeremiah 32:38-40), and in its completion (Philippians 1:6; Ephesians 5:25-27; Jude 24-25).

In old eternity the Lord Jesus Christ assumed the responsibility of saving all God’s elect as the Surety of the everlasting covenant. When Christ agreed to save us, he became responsible to save us (John 10:16-18). In fact, the Book of God declares that he is the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world and that we were saved in him from eternity (Revelation 13:8; 17:8; Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:3-6).

In his life of obedience unto God as a man, our Savior worked out a perfect righteousness for us, which is imputed to all who believe. He brought in everlasting righteousness by his obedience, made it ours; and by this (his own righteousness imputed to us in justification), he makes us worthy of God’s acceptance (Romans 5:l9).

When he died upon the cross, the Son of God fully satisfied the claims of divine justice against us; and he made that satisfaction for a particular people (1 John 4:9-10; Isaiah 53:8; John 10:15, 26). Christ purchased for his redeemed people all the rights and privileges of salvation and eternal life.

Then, having purchased eternal salvation for his elect, the Lord Jesus Christ was exalted to the throne of universal dominion to sovereignly govern the universe for the purpose of giving eternal life to his elect, redeemed people (John 17:2). He gives us eternal life by giving us his Spirit in regeneration, by making us partakers of the divine nature, imparting to us his own righteous being, making us “meet to be partakers of the inheritance” awaiting us in Glory (Colossians 1:12).

In the last day the good Shepherd will present all the sheep entrusted to his care to the Father. The covenant Surety will present all the elect people, given into his hand before the world began, holy, unblameable, unreproveable and glorious before the throne of the triune God (Hebrews 2:13; Colossians 1:21-22). Not one of God’s elect shall ever perish, because “Salvation is of the Lord!
