Day of Judgment! Day of Wonders — John Newton (Tune: #99 Angels, from the Realms of Glory — 87.87.87)
1. Day of Judgment! Day of wonders! Hark! the trumpet’s awful sound, Louder than a thousand thunders, shakes the vast creation round! How the summons, how the summons will the sinner’s heart confound!
2. See the Judge, our nature wearing, clothed in majesty divine! You who long for His appearing then shall say, “This God is mine!” Gracious Savior, gracious Savior, own me in that day for Thine!
3. At His call the dead awaken, rise to life from earth and sea; All the powers of nature shaken by His look, prepares to flee. Careless sinner, careless sinner, what will then become of thee?
4. Horrors, past imagination, will surprise your trembling heart, When you hear your condemnation, “Hence, accursed wretch, depart! Thou, with Satan, thou, with Satan and his angels, have thy part!”
5. Satan, who now tries to please you, lest you timely warning take, When that word is past, will seize you, plunge you in the burning lake: Think, poor sinner, think, poor sinner, thy eternal all’s at stake.
6. But to those who have confessed, and loved and served the Lord below, He will say, “Come near, ye blessed, see the kingdom I bestow; You forever, you forever shall My love and glory know.”
7. Under sorrows and reproaches, may this thought your courage raise! Swiftly God’s great day approaches, sighs shall then be changed to praise. We shall triumph, we shall triumph when the world is in a blaze.
Our dear friend and sister in Christ, Martha Richardson, was called home to her Redeemer last Sunday. We extend our sincere sympathy to her husband, Pastor Scott Richardson, their family and Katy Baptist Church in Fairmont, WV.
16 The Difference
“But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.” (Exodus 11:7)
Let us ever adore and praise our great God and Savior for his free grace and distinguishing mercy toward us. — The only difference between the believer and the unbeliever, between the righteous and the wicked, between the seed of Christ and the seed of the serpent, is the difference grace has made. This every heaven born soul gladly acknowledges. — “By the grace of God I am what I am!” God’s grace is always particular, distinctive, and distinguishing. Those who are saved are distinguished from those who are lost by five marvelous acts of grace.
Election
The first distinguishing act of God’s grace is his eternal election. If you can, with the eye of faith, trace every spiritual blessing that you now enjoy, and those which you hope to enjoy back to the place of their original source, the place of their origin would be spelled “E L E C T I O N” (Ephesians 1:3-4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; Jeremiah 1:4; 31:3).
Redemption
The second act of grace by which God has distinguished his elect from the rest of mankind is effectual redemption. By his precious blood, poured out unto death upon the cross, the Lord Jesus Christ has effectually ransomed God’s elect from the hands of divine justice, by satisfying the claims of justice against us (Isaiah 53:8-11; Galatians 3:13; Hebrews 9:12).
Providence
The third act of grace by which the Lord has distinguished us from the rest of the world is his adorable providence. Our God governs all the affairs of this world; and he has governed all the affairs and circumstances of our lives to bring us to the place where we now are, and to eternal glory in Christ (Matthew 10:29-31; Romans 8:28).
Regeneration
The fourth act of grace by which we are distinguished from all other men is God’s sovereign work of regeneration. The only thing that makes you different from any other being on this planet, if you are born again, is the fact that God has saved you. He gave you life and faith in Christ by the irresistible power of his Spirit (Ephesians 2:1-10).
Preservation
The fifth act of grace by which God distinguishes his elect from the unbelieving is his merciful preservation. The only thing that keeps us in grace is grace itself. The only thing that holds us to Christ is Christ himself (Jeremiah 32:38-40).
17 A Far-reaching, All-inclusive Work Pastor Peter Meney
The salvation of a single sinner is a far-reaching, all-inclusive work of the Triune God. To single out any particular part fails to do justice to the whole miraculous work of grace.
For example, there is no salvation without election, redemption, calling, hearing, conversion and perseverance. Sovereign grace is God providentially working all things together for good to those who love God. Someone asked, “What does it take to bring a sinner to Christ?” The answer is, everything. Absolutely everything in time and in eternity is what it takes to bring one soul to Christ. Every action, every word, every previous event has been directed towards that one precise instant of time. It is a greater work than perhaps any of us yet realize (John 14:12).
The work of the Holy Spirit in accomplishing the elective purpose of the Father, and applying the redemption blessings of the Son ought not to be overlooked. Salvation, daily deliverance from sin and security in Christ, is the work of the Holy Spirit just as surely as it is the work of the Father and the Son.

If I should compare the natural state of man, I would picture an immense graveyard filled with yawning graves and dying men. All around are lofty walls and massive iron gates. At the gate stands Mercy. An angel attracted by the awful sight exclaims, “Mercy, why do you not enter that awful place and apply to these pitiful creatures your restoring balm?” Mercy replies, “I dare not enter, for Justice bars the way.” By the side of Mercy stands the Son of God, who cries, “Justice, what are your demands?” Justice replies, “I demand a full obedience for their holiness, degradation for their exaltation, shame for their honor, and suffering and death for their lives.” The Son of God, as the Surety for sinners, accepted the terms; and at Calvary the heavenly host of redeemed souls cried, “Worthy is the Lamb, for Thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.”
“Shout, believer, to thy God! He hath once the wine-press trod; Peace procured by blood divine; cancelled all thy sins and mine.
Here thy bleeding wounds are healed; sin condemned and pardon sealed; Grace her empire still maintains; love without a rival reigns.
Though corruption’s felt within, (Darkness, deadness, guilt, and sin!), Still to Jesus turn thy eyes — Israel’s Hope and Sacrifice.
In thy Surety thou art free; His dear hands were pierced for thee; With His spotless garment on, holy as the Holy One!
Oh, the heights and depths of grace! Shining with meridian blaze; Here the sacred records show sinners black, but comely too.
Saints dejected, cease to mourn, faith shall soon to vision turn; Ye the kingdom shall obtain, and with Christ exalted reign!”
