Almighty God, for Grace We Pray Don Fortner

(Tune: The Doxology — LM)

1.     Almighty God, for grace we pray,

Attend our gath’ring here today;

We’ve come to worship at Your throne

Through Christ, Your well-beloved Son.

2.     Your Holy Spirit send this hour

And fill Your servant with His pow’r;

Leave not Your messenger alone,

But give him grace to preach Your Son.

3.     Our hearts remove from earthly care

And fill with grace, and praise, and prayer;

Reveal Your Son, expose our sin,

And turn our hearts in faith to Him.

“Let Your Speech Be Alway With Grace”

Colossians 4:6

Pastor Henry Mahan

This is not just to talk about the grace of God, but our speech should reveal the grace of God.

            1. Speak the truth faithfully and sincerely, without lying, flattery, or exaggeration.

            2. Speak in love, avoiding gossip, whisperings, or anything that is injurious to the character of another. Avoid sowing discord or division.

            3. Speak kindly and pleasantly. Hard words reveal a hard heart. Unkind, cutting remarks reveal a bitter spirit.

            Grace is to the speech what salt is to meat. It makes it acceptable, good to the ear, and a blessing to the heart. Grace in the heart will teach you how you ought to answer any person. Knowledge is not acquired by speaking, but it ought to go before it!

Between Death and the Resurrection

2 Corinthians 5:6

When speaking of the believer’s death, the Word of God always represents it as an immediate entrance into heavenly blessedness. Actually, for the believer, death is not death at all, but the beginning of life. God’s elect never die (John 11:26). The death of a believer’s body is the liberation of his soul. And as soon as our souls are freed from this body of sin and death, we enter heaven. This is the doctrine of God’s Word.

(Isaiah 57:1-2) “The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.”

When the righteous perish from the earth, they live in uprightness forever. Those who have been made righteous by the grace of God, having the righteousness of Christ imputed to them in justification and imparted to them in the sanctification of the new birth, when they die, are taken away from evil. They enter into a world of peace. They rest in their beds, their bodies in the grave and their souls in the arms of Christ. And they live in the uprightness of glorified spirits forever.

(Luke 16:22-25) “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.”

As soon as the believer dies, he is carried by the angels of God into heaven, “Abraham’s bosom,” the place of endless comfort. At death, every repentant sinner is taken to be with Christ in Paradise. Paradise is Heaven, the Garden of God (Revelation 2:7; Luke 23:43). It is that place of assured blessedness promised to sinners who seek the mercy of God in Christ. Our Savior said to the dying thief, “Today,” immediately, “shalt thou,” assuredly, “be with me,” in endless company, “in paradise,” heavenly glory.

            Death for the believer is infinite, immeasurable, immediate gain. Believers, upon leaving this world, lose nothing but sin and sorrow, and gain everything good and glorious (Philippians 1:21, 23).

            What is the state of the saints’ life between death and the resurrection? I will not say more than God has revealed. But we are assured that God’s saints are not floating around in the sky sleeping! They have gone to a specific place called Heaven, where Christ is. There they are assembled as a glorified church (Hebrews 12:22-23).  And their souls exist in a recognizable  form  (Luke 16:23; Matthew 17:3). Do God’s saints have a body between death and the resurrection? A physical body? No. A spiritual body, a heavenly form, a house for their souls? Most definitely! (2 Corinthians 5:1). Every believer, as soon as he leaves this body of flesh, enters into heaven with Christ. It is this assurance that makes death a desirable thing for the believer.

“I delight to do thy will, O my God.”

Psalm 40:8

We know that these words are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ because the Spirit of God has told us so (Hebrews 10:7-9). They find their ultimate, perfect fulfillment in the Person and work of Christ. How we rejoice to know that Christ, the Godman, our Substitute, has fulfilled all the will of God for us! By his obedience to God in our stead the Lord Jesus obtained eternal redemption for us (Hebrews 9:12). His obedience to God is our righteousness. His blood is our atonement for sin (Romans 5:19; Ephesians 1:7). We are complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10). And we are accepted in him because he delighted to do the will of God as our Substitute.

            However, these are also the words of David, a sinner saved by the grace of God. They express the desire, ambition, and driving force of every believer’s heart. All who are born of God bear this distinct mark of grace in the likeness of Christ. From our hearts we cry, “I delight to do thy will, O my God.”

Nothing is more important. Our joy and happiness is not merely in receiving good from God, but in rendering active service to our God. We desire to obey and serve our heavenly Father in all things and to do his will at all times, not reluctantly, or of necessity, but cheerfully. God’s will is our joy and delight.

And we rejoice to see God’s will done by others. Our hearts’ prayer is, “Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10). God the Holy Ghost teaches every believer in the world to pray with Christ, “Thy will be done.” The more we grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ the more we are consumed by this holy ambition. Were it possible to gather all the desires, ambitions, aspirations, goals, and prayers of all God’s saints in heaven and in earth into one expression, it would be “Thy will be done.” Every believer delights to do the will of God.

            When the believing heart cries, “I delight to do thy will, O my God,” the meaning of his prayer is, “My heavenly Father, my God, my dear Savior, in my heart of hearts, from the depth of my inmost soul, I delight to fulfill your will of purpose. I delight to satisfy your will of pleasure. I delight to obey your will of precept. And I delight to submit to your will of providence.” We rejoice in the fact that our heavenly Father is God who “worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” We wouldn’t have anything any other way than it is. Whatever is, my brother my sister, “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
