Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal Throne — Don Fortner

1. Our sov’reign God maintains His universal throne;

In heav’n, and earth, and hell He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whate’er He please; and none can stay his hand!

2. All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sov’reignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But Esau’s heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3. What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay,

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will, or say, “What doest Thou?”

Jehovah is the Sov’reign still; and all to Him must bow!

“Had All Things Common”

Acts 2:44

In the Book of Acts we read that “all that believed were together, and had all things common.” There was no precept for the communal living of the Church, which seems to have been what they were practicing at the time. Yet, the principle and attitude of those early believers about their personal property is clearly a gospel principle. These men and women recognized that they were one family in Christ. Whatever God had blessed them with in his good providence, they looked upon not as something given for their personal pleasure and gratification, but as goods entrusted to them for the welfare of God’s family and the furtherance of the gospel of Christ.

No Strangers in Heaven

“And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 8:11)

I have often been asked, “Will we know one another in heaven?” Unless I am terribly mistaken in my understanding of Holy Scripture, the answer is obvious. God’s saints in heaven are engaged in constant, uninterrupted fellowship with their Triune God, with one another, and with the holy angels. A casual reading of the book of Revelation conveys the idea that God’s saints will forever discuss with one another and with the heavenly angels the wonders of covenant mercy, the ministry of the angelic hosts, redeeming love, saving grace, and divine providence. Yes, all God’s saints will see and know one another in that glorious world of bliss.

Just before he died, someone asked Martin Luther, “Sir, will we know one another in the other world?” Luther answered, “As Adam knew Eve to be bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh by the revelation of God, though he had never seen her before, so shall the saints of God know one another in heaven.” As the apostles knew Moses and Elijah on the mount with Christ, though they had never seen them, or even seen a picture or description of them before, so shall we know the saints of God in heaven. In heaven we will know parents, wives, husbands, children, and friends far more perfectly than ever we knew them on the earth.

There will be no strangers in heaven. If there were a stranger in the heavenly company, freedom and joy would be greatly hindered. Who is free around a stranger? In heaven’s glory when the bodies of God’s saints are raised up to glory, we shall see and know one another and all God’s saints. When we sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, we shall all see Christ in all his glory and the Bride, the Lamb’s wife, in all the beauty which he has given her. We shall see and know every believer. And we shall love and esteem them all perfectly.

Heaven

I’ve come across some things that helped me and I want to pass it on to you. We understand more about what heaven is and will be to us, by what it is not, and will not be.

There’ll be no more sin, no more pain, no more sorrows, no more crying, no more war, no more death, no more sickness, no more heartache, this is what heaven is, no more fear, no more confusion, no more lacking anything, no more vanity, no more waiting, no more going astray, no more reproach, no more affliction, no more darkness, no more trouble, no more curse, no more dishonoring God. Our name will no more be called Jacob. We’ll be the children of the living God

And when we take our last breath and go out into that world, we’ll feel good about it, since we know a little more about it, what it will be, and I myself, experience it every day. I know that I’m going to die. — Not very long. And I’ll be glad if I make one turn over in bed tonight and go to sleep. I’ll be happy about it, because heaven is my happiness. The Lord bless us.

“All Things”

Romans 8:28

These two words are used together more than 200 times in the Word of God. “All things” is an all-inclusive, universal term. “All things” means “all things”. God does not say “all things” when he means “some things”, or “most things”. When God says, “all things”, he means “all things”. This is what the Lord God tells us about “all things”.

“All things are of God” (2 Corinthians 5:18). — Everything that comes to pass in time was purposed and predestinated by God in eternity (Ephesians 1:11), and is brought to pass in time by God’s sovereign providence (Isaiah 45:7; Romans 11:36). There are no accidents in this world. There is no such thing as “luck,” “fate,” or “chance.” “All things are of God.” This is especially true with reference to salvation. “Salvation is of the Lord!” He planned it. He purchased it. He performs it. He preserves it. He perfects it. And he shall have all the praise for it!

“All things are for your sakes” (2 Corinthians 4:15). — If you are a believer, one of God’s elect, everything that ever has been, is, or shall be has been ordained and is brought to pass by God for your eternal, spiritual good (Romans 8:28). Nothing ever has happened, shall happen, or can happen that will harm you (Proverbs 12:21). Divine predestination and divine sovereignty are the security of the believer’s soul.

“All things are yours” (1 Corinthians 3:21). — All things are yours by God’s design. All things are yours to use for your own comfort and pleasure as you seek to glorify God in all things. All things are yours if you are Christ’s, for Christ is the Maker and Possessor of all things.

“I can’t go to church with people like that.”

People rarely recognize how greatly they expose their pride and self-righteousness by the things they say and do. Over the years, I have known a good many people who, finding fault with someone else, have left one local church and gone to another. When asked why, I have heard many say, “I can’t go to church with people like that….with people who believe that…with people who wear…” etc. Others can’t attend church here because we do or do not practice closed communion.

I have a few questions for all you good pompous religionists. Do you reckon the Lord Jesus knew Judas was a betrayer when he sat with him at the first communion service? Obviously, he did. Yet, he served the bread and wine to Judas and to Peter. Do you suppose there were any people in the local church at Corinth who had a problem with inebriation? Obviously, there were some. But Paul never suggested that faithful brethren should therefore abandon the assembly. Were there any in the Galatian church who had a problem with legalism? Indeed, there were. But none were taught that they should therefore abandon the church.

If you are looking for the perfect church, you’ve come to the wrong building. That’s the one down the road or across the country. This is a family of sinners saved by God’s free grace in Christ. We’ve come here to worship him, sing his praise, proclaim his goodness, hear from him, and help one another along the way.
