Fear not Little Flock — Don Fortner

1. Oh, hear the Shepherd’s voice,

Who with His flock appears,

He bids His trembling lambs rejoice

And quietens our fears.

We shall to glory rise.

“Fear not,” our Father will bestow

A kingdom in the skies.

3. So, “Fear not little flock,”

By Jesus’ blood redeemed:

“Eating And Drinking, Marrying and Giving in Marriage”

Matthew 24:37-39

When the Lord Jesus comes again, the world will be in the same condition it is in now (vv. 37-39). It will be exactly as it has always been! The world will not be converted before Christ comes. It will be in the same condition it was in when God sent the flood. When our Lord says, “As the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be,” he means for us to understand that three things will characterize the world until the end of time. These three things were characteristic of the world in Noah’s day, in the days of our Lord’s earthly ministry, and in our day. And these three things will characterize the world in the day when our Savior comes again.

1. The world is now, forever has been, and forever shall be absorbed in carnal sensual pursuits.

There is nothing wrong with eating and drinking. If we did not eat and drink, we could not live. There is nothing wrong with marrying and giving in marriage. “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled” (Hebrews 13:4). Did men and women not marry and give themselves to one another in marriage, the human race would cease to be. However, when men and women, possessing immortal souls, live only to gratify themselves with the carnal pleasures of this earth, they live as fools and brute beasts. Do not be so foolish (Matthew 6:31-33). That which is perfectly lawful in normal circumstances becomes a positive evil and a snare when it keeps us from seeking, knowing, and serving Christ (Matthew 13:22). “Woe unto those whose eating and drinking do not include the bread and the water of life; and who marry or are given in marriage, but not to the heavenly Bridegroom!” (C.H. Spurgeon) I tremble for the souls of men and women who gradually allow the things of this world to become the primary concern of their hearts. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). Nothing in this world is more destructive of men’s souls than worldliness. By worldliness I mean the love of the world. I urge you, as you care for your soul, “Love not the world!”

2. The second characteristic of the world is that it is totally oblivious to eternal, spiritual things.

Both religious people and irreligious people, the moralist as well as the libertine, all are alike ignorant of and oblivious to the things of God. Just as the people of Noah’s day were oblivious to God’s judgment and his salvation, the people of our day are naturally unconcerned about heaven, hell, immortality, judgment, and the glory of God.

3. Though the gospel shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, the vast majority of those who hear it are guilty of despising it.

As in Noah’s day, so it is now, and so it shall be to the end. Most who hear the gospel despise it. As stated above, the world will not be converted before Christ comes. The purpose of God shall stand. God’s elect shall be saved. But in the last day, as in Noah’s day and in our day, God’s elect shall be few, “a remnant according to the election of grace.”

The Great Separation

Matthew 24:40-44

In that great day, when Christ comes again, there will be a great separation (vv. 40-41). In the church, the factory, the field, and the family the children of God and the children of the devil are side by side. But it shall not always be so. When Christ comes again, there shall be a great separation made. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, these two groups shall be forever separated.

Everlasting Separation

In that great and terrible day, the divisions and separation of the godly from the ungodly will be decisive, immediate, and everlasting. There will be no time for repentance. As we are in that day, so we shall be forever! Believers shall be caught up to heaven, glory, honor, and eternal life. Unbelievers shall be snatched away and cast into hell, damnation, eternal destruction, and death. Let us make our calling and election sure. — “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ!”

J. C. Ryle wrote, “Blessed and happy are they who are of one heart in following Christ! Their union alone shall never be broken: it shall last for ever more. Who can imagine the happiness of those who are taken, when the Lord returns? Who can imagine the misery of those who are left behind? May we think on these things, and consider our ways!”

Watchfulness

It is our responsibility to be always watchful, ready for and anticipating the Lord’s coming (vv. 42-44). This is a point which our Master frequently presses upon us. He seldom mentions his second coming without urging us to be watchful. He knows the slothfulness of our nature. He knows how quickly we forget the most solemn things. He knows how worldly minded we are by nature. He knows how constantly Satan seeks to destroy us, and with what cunning devices. Therefore he arms us with heart-searching exhortations to be awake and alert, lest we be found at last among the damned (1 Thessalonians. 5:6; Revelation 3:11). We will be wise, like the spouse in the Song of Solomon (7:12), to rise up early, shake off all carnal security, determine not to be slothful and sluggish, and stand watchful over our souls, that we may be prepared at any moment to meet our Lord and Master. We do not know, we cannot even guess, in what watch of the earth’s long night Christ will come. But we do know that he may come at any moment. Therefore we ought to be as watchful as if we knew that Christ would come today. “Oh, to be ready for his appearing,” Spurgeon said to his congregation, “watching and waiting for him as servants whose Lord has been long away from them, and who may return at any hour!”

Ready

Are you ready? Are you ready now to meet God in judgment? What an awesome thought that is! Yet, it is a thought that I pray will never cease to rouse our hearts. Soon we must meet God in judgment. Are we ready? There is only one way that we can indeed be ready. We must be in Christ, united to him by faith, washed in his blood, robed in his righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30).
