Every now and then I meet with a preacher who
professes to believe the gospel but refuses to preach it clearly. I am told,
"You can't just plainly, declare the doctrines of grace. For the sake of
peace and unity, we must tone it down a little." Rubbish! We dare not hide
the offence of the cross. It is not possible to make sovereign grace acceptable
to rebels. I say, if people do not like Divine
Sovereignty, preach it more, not less. If the people are uneasy with the
doctrines of grace, preach them all the more boldly, clearly, and frequently.
If the gospel of God's free and sovereign grace in Christ, faithfully preached,
offends men they need to be offended; if it will destroy a church, that church
need to be destroyed!
