01v03 The Public Reading of Scripture
THE PUBLIC
Rev. 1:3
In the temple worship of the
Old Testament a prominent place was given to the public reading of Scripture.
This custom was carried on during the days of our Lord's earthly ministry, and
in the early church, Whenever the church has been
strong and well instructed in gospel doctrine, she has made the public reading
of the Word of God a regular practice.
This is a fundamental part of our public worship. If
it is truly an act of worship, reading the Scriptures publicly demonstrates our
reverence for the volume of inspiration. "Thus saith the Lord", is
our only rule of faith and practice. As we read the Word together, let us be
willing to hear and ready to obey. "Blessed is he that readeth,
and they that hear the words of this prophecy..."
