heb 07v22 Christ Our Surety
"By so much was Jesus made
a Surety of a better testament." Hebrews 7:22
By the oath and decree of
God, in the eternal council of grace, the Lord Jesus Christ became our Surety.
God the Father appointed to him the responsibility of redeeming, justifying,
and saving all his elect; and he voluntarily agreed to assume that
responsibility. As a Surety, all of the elect were entrusted to the hands of
Christ, and all the blessings of the new testament, or covenant, flow to us
through our Surety's hand.
In fulfillment of his covenant engagements, Christ
came to this earth in human flesh. As our Surety, he lived in righteous
obedience to God's holy law, died under the penalty of the law, and rose again.
And as our Surety, the Lord Jesus Christ has been exalted to the throne of
universal dominion, upon which he reigns in total sovereignty over all things
to accomplish the everlasting salvation of his covenant people.
In that future world, when
all the purposes of God have been fulfilled, our blessed Surety will present
every believing sinner, those for whom he lived and died, those who were given
to him in the covenant of grace, those who were chosen by him in everlasting
love, holy and unblameable and unreproveable before his Father's throne,
saying, "Behold I and the children which God hath given me."
For all of this, we joyfully and thankfully trust our
blessed Surety, the Lord Jesus Christ. He has sworn and cannot fail, none of
his sheep shall ever perish!
