A Mighty Savior for Needy Sinners

Hebrews 7:25

Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.” It is my responsibility as God’s messenger to your soul to persuade you to trust his darling Son. How can I do so? What words shall I use?

Lost

I cannot imagine a sadder word than the word “lost.” If you are yet without Christ, you are a lost sinner (1 John 5:10-12). How those words ought to alarm you! If you are without faith in Christ, the wrath of God is upon you! You are guilty, depraved, and helpless. You are justly condemned. The flaming sword of divine justice thirsts for your blood! Unless God is pleased to save you, you will soon be in hell. You know that this is the sad state of your soul. Your conscience bears witness to the fact that you are lost.

Righteousness

The holy Lord God demands righteousness from you, perfect righteousness. It is written, “That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Yet, you cannot produce righteousness. The polluted fountain of your depraved heart can never bring forth the pure water of righteousness.

Satisfaction

As God demands righteousness, so he demands satisfaction. Sin must be punished. “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” “Every one shall die for his own iniquity.” “The wages of sin is death.” Again, your very conscience tells you this is so. Yet, death, even the everlasting death of men in hell, can never satisfy the infinite justice of God.

Christ

Never can a lost soul find a sweeter word than this! Christ is the Son of God. Christ is the Mediator between God and men. Christ is the Savior of lost sinners. Christ is hope. Christ is life. Christ is able to save unto the uttermost all who come to God by him! Christ and Christ alone can save you (1 Tim. 2:5-6; Acts 4:12).

The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world, God in human flesh, as a representative Man. He lived in perfect obedience to the law and will of God as a man, bringing in everlasting righteousness for all who look to him alone for righteousness. Once he had fully obeyed the demands of the law as the God-man Mediator, the Lord Jesus Christ took the sins of his people upon himself and died the ignominious death of the cross as the sinners’ Substitute, satisfying all the law and justice of God for his people. Now, he is able to save to the uttermost all who trust him, because in him, by the merits of his blood and righteousness, God is both “a just God and a Savior.” May God be pleased now to grant you faith in him to the saving of your soul.
