SUBMISSION

Ephesians 5:21

When Paul describes the Spirit filled life, he teaches us that it consists, basically, of three things: Joy (v.19), Gratitude (v.20), and Submission (v.21). The believer is not a weak-kneed coward; but neither is he a self-willed rebel. He is a man under submission to the Spirit of Christ. And if you are in submission to Christ, that submission will be seen in your attitude toward the people of Christ. Paul tells us what our attitude toward each other should be: "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God." In another place he says, "In lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." For the glory of God, for the sake of the gospel, and for the unity of the church the believer submits his thoughts, opinions, and preferences to his brethren. He would rather suffer offence than cause offence. He would rather be wronged than to wrong another.
