ÒThe God of this WorldÓ

2 Corinthians 4:4

Our translators, in my opinion, were mistaken in using a lower case ÒgÓ for God in this passage. Their doing implies that Satan is here spoken of as Òthe god of this world.Ó Nowhere in Scripture is Satan given such a title. And there is no reason in this passage to imagine that Paul is referring to Satan. He who is God is the Maker, Proprietor, and Governor of this world. It is he, and he alone, who blinds the eyes of them that believe not the gospel of Christ (John 12:40; Romans 11:7; 2 Corinthians 3:14; 2 Thessalonians 2:11). And it is he alone who Òcommanded the light to shine out of darknessÓ in our hearts Òto give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.Ó In judgment God sends blindness. In grace he sends light and causes Òthe blind to seeÓ (Matthew 15:31). When God comes to save, Òin that day the deaf shall hear the words of the Book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darknessÓ (Isaiah 29:18).
