1co 14v34 Let You Women Keep Silence In The
I Corinthians 14:34
Basically, Paul's instruction
is that women are to be of a meek and quiet spirit. I do not believe that Paul
is here absolutely forbidding women to speak, because they are in other places
admonished to speak to one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs
(Col. 3:16); and the older women of the church are admonished to teach the
younger women to be wise, loving their husbands and children (Tit. 2:4). Paul's
prohibition regards women preaching, or teaching men, or in anyway usurping
authority over them. It is forbidden for women to assume the responsibility of
instructing, directing, or leading men in the congregation. THE CHURCH BODY
IS NOT TO BE LEAD, GOVERNED, OR TAUGHT BY WOMEN. In fact, if a woman has
question about the teachings, the government, or the oversight of the church,
Paul instructs her to ask her husband at home. The reason for this plain
instruction is simply that "it is a shame for women to speak in the
church". It is a shame for women to speak, because it is contrary to that
natural modesty which should characterize women. Such conduct betrays a
boldness and presumption unbecoming to women. It is a shame for any church to
be under the ministry, direction, and leadership of women. And it is a shame
for men to allow such a thing.
A woman may be permitted, or even asked, to speak for
some particular reason; but modesty should prevent her from seeking to do so.
And certainly, no woman should be offended because she is not allowed to speak,
as though it were her right to do so; it is not. A general rule for a woman's
behavior in the church is that which should characterize her attitude in all
relations of life. Whether at home or in the public assembly
of God's people, say nothing and do nothing that is contrary to meekness,
quietness, and submissiveness. The beauty of a believing woman is not her
lavish clothes, jewelry, and cosmetics, nor even her physical features; but
rather a meek and quiet spirit.
