“We all do what we want to do.”

I talked to a friend this afternoon who, after chatting for a while about his neglect of public worship, said, “I guess we all do what we want to do.” My response was, “Exactly what we want.” To that he replied, “I know that’s true, but it’s scary.” It may be a frightening fact, but it is a fact that we always do what we want to do. If we want to worship God, we do. If we prefer to do something else, we do. If we have a job to do and want to do it right, we do. If we want to do just enough to get by, we do. If we want to do what we know we ought to do in any area of life, we do. If we prefer to do something else, we do. The sooner we quit making excuses for ungodly behavior and honestly face the fact that our actions are determined by our own choices and our choices by our preferences, the better. The fact is, “We all do what we want to do.” “Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).
