Christ's New Commandment
John 13:34-35
Of all the commands of our Lord, none is more talked about and less
obeyed than that of brotherly love. Yet, none are more important. Brotherly
love is the law of Christ's kingdom. It is the believer's rule of life. It is
the sure result of a saving union with the Son of God.
Love is a New Commandment. Not that it was never taught before
the times of Christ. Love is the sum of the moral law of God, as given by Moses
(Mt.
Brotherly love is
enforced by Christ's own example. We are to love one another, as Christ
loved us. The love of Christ toward us was unselfish, trusting, sympathetic,
patient, and practical. He loved not in word, but in deed. Let us see to it
that we follow his example (I John
Love is the Proof of Our Faith. By this all men know that we belong to Christ. By this we know that we
know him. What can be nearer to heaven on earth than an assembly of loving
brethren? Brethren, let us love one another.
