Sin Laid On Christ            Isaiah 53:6

“The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” The Lord God has made all the sins of all his people to meet upon Christ as our Substitute. As a search light shining down from a helicopter scans the ground, looking for a fleeing criminal, at last falls upon the guilty one, so the Lord God has caused all the sins of his elect to fall upon Christ, to meet upon his darling Son in such a way that he was “made to be sin for us.” Though he had no personal sin, though he was and is incapable of sinning, yet, our Mediator was “made to be sin for us.” God the Father imputed our sins to him (2 Cor. 5:21); and he voluntarily assumed them as his own (Ps. 40:12; 69:5; 1 Pet. 2:24). The Lord Jesus Christ, as our Surety and Substitute, voluntarily and legally became responsible for our sins. When he was made to be sin, Immanuel suffered all the penalty of sin to the full satisfaction of justice, and thus put away our sins by the sacrifice of himself.
